The Order of the Star ( Ordre de l'Étoile ) was a French courtly knightly order and was founded in August 1022 by King Robert II of France in honor of the Mother of God.

The order was shut down by Philip of Valois . The occasion was the incessant wars between the French and the English. In 1352 it was renewed again by Johann II . He set up a seat for the knights for the order in the house of Saint Owen de Clichy near Saint Denis , not far from Paris . In 1487, however, it was repealed by King Charles VII . The reputation of the order had declined. When Charles VII called for the abolition of the order, the bodyguards continued to wear a white star embroidered with gold on their saddlecloths until the revolution in 1789 .

It is said to have consisted of thirty knights . The Grand Master was the King of France himself.

Order decoration

The medal consisted of three gold chains braided with roses and enamelled in white and red. A gold star hung from the chains.

Order clothing

The knights wore a cloak of white damask and on the left side of the chest a pentagonal star embroidered with gold.
