Gestel ( bret. : Yestael ) is a French municipality with 2684 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Lorient and the canton of Guidel .

geography

Gestel is located in the interior of the Morbihan department on the border with the Finistère department . It's about ten kilometers to the sea. From Gestel it is only around nine kilometers in a south-easterly direction to the city center of Lorient . The place is on the Route nationale 165 and on the Savenay – Landerneau railway .

history

Finds prove human presence at the time of the Gauls and Romans. In the Middle Ages, monks from the Abbey of Saint-Maurice-de-Carnoët founded a small monastery in Moustoiric. Gestel first belonged to the parish of Bévoy, from the 15th century until the French Revolution to the parish of Lesbin-Pont Scorff. Gestel only became an independent municipality in 1790.
