The Étel ( French: Rivière d'Étel , Breton .: Stêr an Intel ) is a coastal river in France that runs in the Morbihan department in the Brittany region . It rises under the name Rion in the municipality of Languidic , first drains in a westerly direction, then generally swings to the south, changing its name several times to Pont du Roc'h, Goah Guillerm and finally flows as Étel south of the eponymous town of Étel between the Municipalities of Erdeven and Plouhinec after a total of 35 kilometers in the Atlantic Ocean . Below Nostang , for about the last 15 kilometers, the Étel is already exposed to the tides and forms an estuary of the Ria type . This means that both the river's own course and its tributaries are cut so deep that they are completely covered by sea water at high tide and form a widely branched coastal landscape in which even some islands are embedded, while at low tide extensive brackish wetlands and silt deposits stay behind. At the actual confluence with the ocean, a mighty barrier was raised by the river debris .

Tributaries

(Order in flow direction)

Even if the tributaries are only small, they form large areas of water in the lower reaches when the tide is appropriate and are partly responsible for the pronounced shape of the estuary of the Ria .

Left tributaries:

  • Landévant , feeder: Demi-Ville (21 km)
  • Stêr en Istrec , feeder: Pont Lesdour (8 km)
  • Chenal de Saint Jean , feeder: Calavret (13 km)
  • Sac'h , feeder: Poumen , (9 km)

Right tributaries:

  • Lézévry (11 km)
  • Chenal de Berringue (2 km)
  • Chenal de Bisconte (10 km)

economy

The fishing was once the main source of income in the mouth of the river. After the yield fell, the fishing industry was relocated to other areas. Afterwards, attempts were made to develop new sources of income with oyster farming systems . Even the tourism with the many marinas is of great importance.
