The Handballspielgemeinschaft Freiberg e. V. is a non-profit handball club from Freiberg .

history

In 1922 the first handball game of a Freiberg team took place, it was the game TV Freiberg against TV Flöha.

In 1930 handball suffered a setback in Freiberg. The reason for this was the descent from the master class of the Central Saxon Handball Association. After 1945 there was a renewed upswing and a restart in several clubs. In 1954, in addition to the Freiberg unit, students also played handball at the HSG Wissenschaft Freiberg. The 1st team was promoted to the district league in 1958.

It followed in 1961 the rise in field handball in the GDR league (2nd division) and in 1963 in indoor handball in the upper league (1st division, two-tier). In 1964 a one-tier league was formed. This was followed by relegation to the GDR league. In the years from 1965 to 1991, the 1st team belonged almost exclusively to the GDR League with 3rd to 10th places. The Ernst-Grube-Sporthalle was inaugurated in December 1973. This made it possible to host home games in Freiberg.

The name of the club was changed to the Academic Gymnastics and Sports Club Freiberg in June 1990. A unified handball association was formed in Germany. In 1991/92 the club belonged to the 2nd Bundesliga, but relegation followed and from 1992 they played in the regional league of the South German Handball Association.

In April 1993, the handball department was spun off from ATSV Freiberg and a handball club, Handball-Spiel-Gemeinschaft Freiberg (HSG Freiberg) was formed. In the period from 1993 to 1997 and the 1999/2000 season, the HSG Freiberg played in the Regionalliga Süd.

In the period from 1997 to 1999 and from the 2000/01 season they played in the major leagues. The finals for the German State Cups for national teams (youngsters), which were held again in Freiberg in March 2007 after 2003, brought recognition by the German Handball Federation and the handball associations of the federal states.

In September 2007 the HSG celebrated the 85th anniversary of handball in Freiberg. In addition to a field handball game by the oldies from the university town and from Flöha, all HSG teams met with guests from various Saxon clubs in the Ernst-Grube-Halle.

Club crest

In 2014 the new logo of the HSG Freiberg was published. The club orientated itself on the youth team "Dachse", which played 2012-2014 in the German A-Jugend-Bundesliga .

Venues

The home games and training sessions of the HSG teams take place - with a few exceptions - in the Ernst-Grube -Halle ("Dachsbau"), which was completely renovated in 2003.

Fan culture

The “Bergstadtpower” fan club has been supporting the HSG Freiberg in home and away games since the 2000s.
