The football department, which initially belonged to the club, split off in 2001 as an independent club under the name FC Grün-Weiß Piesteritz .

The handball department is the largest with over 200 athletes. The club's figurehead is the first men's handball team. In 1982 what was then BSG Chemie achieved promotion to the GDR top division for the first time . With only four wins, however, the team immediately rose again as the table penultimate of the 1982/83 season . Only in 1989 did they return to the top handball league in the GDR. With the withdrawal of SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt during the season , the penultimate place was enough to keep the league. This made the team one of the last ten teams that played another championship in the field of the former GDR at the end of the season in 1990/91 . After the expiry of the regional league contract and the associated dissolution of the middle season, the SV Grün-Weiß was again assigned to the regional league north for the 2005/06 season, but could not hold in this league and was relegated. As runner-up in the Oberliga Sachsen-Anhalt in 2006/07, the Wittenbergers just missed direct resurgence.
