Season course

The handball league played its first league game on September 20, 1989. A few weeks later, the political turning point took its course in the GDR , followed by profound changes in politics and the economy. The first effects were already noticeable in the current league season, which initially affected the Dynamo sports association . Their central sports club Dynamo Berlin adopted the neutral name 1. SC Berlin in April 1990 . The SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt , also operating under the umbrella of SV Dynamo , disbanded in the course of the season, so that their games had to be canceled. Despite the turbulence around the SC Dynamo, this secured the championship title as 1st SC Berlin. The foundation stone for this was laid in the first half of the season, when the East Berliners remained undefeated until matchday 10. Only after the 19:20 defeat at BSG Wismut Aue did Dynamo fall two points behind their long-term rivals SC Empor Rostock . Only four game days before the end of the season, the Berlin team had their forehand against Rostock after minus points , as they lost 26:29 in Eisenach . On the penultimate game day, after a 20:21 home defeat against SC Magdeburg, Empor finally had to give up the table lead to 1. SC Berlin by the end of the season. Last year's champions ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt was also affected by the turning point, because numerous regular players used the open borders and joined clubs in the handball Bundesliga . Weakened in this way, the Frankfurt army handball players only achieved sixth place behind the best company sports association Motor Eisenach (5th). With the BSG Chemie Piesteritz and the HG 85 Köthen two newcomers from the GDR league entered. Due to the withdrawal of SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt, BSG Chemie was able to save itself from relegation as 10th, while HG 85 Köthen had to return to second class. This season, the goal difference decided the final placement among teams with the same number of points.
