The handball GDR Oberliga (women) was held for the 27th time in the 1989/90 season in indoor handball .

Season course

The league season began with ten teams on August 26, 1989 and ended with the 18th matchday on May 3, 1990. The season was marked by constant changes in leadership, where SC Leipzig was most often at the top of the table with ten first places. It was not until the 17th matchday that ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt finally ousted the Leipzig women from the top in a direct comparison with a 17:15 home win, thus securing the championship. The defending champions from SC Empor Rostock only reached third place. With the company sports associations (BSG) Einheit / Sirokko Neubrandenburg and Union Halle-Neustadt , two newcomers entered the race, but only the Neubrandenburg women managed to stay in the league, while Union Halle-Neustadt fell back into the second division after only one year after losing all eighteen league games .

Meister Vorwärts Frankfurt scored the most goals with 481 goals, while SC Leipzig scored the highest victory at 37:12 over Einheit / Sirokko Neubrandenburg. He was involved in the highest-scoring game when he won 35:23 against Halloren Halle on matchday one. The top scorer of the season, Silke Fittinger, came from the championship team, scoring 152 goals, 45 of which she scored from the seven-meter point.
