Hartmut Krüger (handball player)

Hartmut Krüger (born May 8, 1953 in Güsen ) is a former German handball player and handball trainer .

Career

The 1.78 meter tall left wing player played in the GDR Oberliga for SC Magdeburg and was GDR champion seven times with the club , won the European Cup twice and the European Championship for club teams in 1981 .

In the GDR national team he was active with interruptions from 1975 to 1986 and played a total of 157 games. The highlight of his career was the Olympic victory at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . In addition, he reached third place at the World Championships in 1978 and 1986. Before the 1986 World Cup, the then 33-year-old Krüger was already effectively retired as a national player. But after the national team was defeated by SC Magdeburg in a preparatory game and Krüger threw 12 goals in this game, he was added to the World Cup squad. He played all games and threw 8 goals in the game for third place, which the GDR won.

After his active career, he was, among other things, coach of SC Magdeburg from 1989 to 1993. In this role he won the championship title in 1991. Hartmut Krüger is an honorary member of the SCM and was one of the first members of the SCM Hall of Fame .

Krüger was awarded the Gold Patriotic Order of Merit in 1984. For the 1980 Olympic victory in Moscow he received this medal in silver.

In 1986 he was voted handball player of the year .

After handball

After his release in 1993, Krüger retired from Bundesliga handball. Today he runs a crane trading company in Biederitz , which is a sponsor of the SCM.
