Klaus Miesner

Klaus Jürgen Miesner (born December 11, 1935 in Magdeburg ; † January 11, 1989 in Drei Annen ) was a German handball player and coach .

Life

Miesner was born the son of the businessman Gerhard Miesner . After graduating from high school in 1954 at the Käthe-Kollwitz-Oberschule in Magdeburg , Miesner first studied physics at the Technical University of Magdeburg , but then dropped out after two semesters. At times he worked as an intern at the Salbke Reichsbahn repair shop . From 1947 to 1957 he played handball for the company's sports club, the BSG Lok-Südost Magdeburg or its predecessor. In 1954 and 1955 he won the GDR championship with the youth team.

In 1957 he enrolled at the German University of Physical Culture and graduated in 1961 as a certified sports teacher. During his studies Miesner played for the handball team of the SC DHfK Leipzig and won two championship titles. After his return to Magdeburg, he achieved this success again in 1963 with his parent club Lok-Südost Magdeburg. As a handball player he was active for this club from 1961 to 1967. From 1961 to 1967 he worked as a teacher for athletics and physics at the children's and youth sports school in Magdeburg. He began his coaching career in February 1968 as the successor to Bernhard Kandula at SC Magdeburg . In over two decades he formed a large number of international class handball players such as Günter Dreibrodt , Ernst Gerlach , Hartmut Krüger , Wieland Schmidt and Ingolf Wiegert . The result of this work was nine championship titles, four cup wins, two European cup wins and one club European championship. In January 1989 Miesner died of a heart attack during a training camp in Drei Annen in the Harz Mountains . Hartmut Krüger took up his legacy as an SCM trainer. Klaus Miesner was married and had two children.

Honors

The Klaus Miesner memorial tournament takes place every year in his honor in the Harzlandhalle in Ilsenburg. Furthermore, in August 2010 the city of Magdeburg renamed the square in front of the Hermann-Gieseler-Halle, the old home ground of the handball players of SC Magdeburg, to Klaus-Miesner-Platz.
