Meeraner SV has its roots in the sports association (SpVgg) Meerane 07, which was created after the First World War through the merger of several Meeraner sports clubs. The best-known soccer player of the SpVgg was the later national player Richard Hofmann, who was born in Meerane . He started as a teenager at SpVgg and later won three of the four championship titles that Meerane won in the Gauliga West Saxony between 1925 and 1930 with the team . After Hofmann had already played four international matches, he moved to Dresdner SC in 1928 , where he became German champion and cup winner.

After the Second World War , all sports clubs in the Soviet occupation zone were dissolved, and from 1946 regionally restricted competitions could initially be held in loosely organized sports clubs (SG). In Meerane football players joined forces in the SG Einheit Meerane , which from 1947 participated in the regional championships in Saxony. As Glauchau district champions they qualified for the Saxon quarter-finals, in which they defeated SG Motor Gohlis-Nord 1-0. The championship was only continued until the semi-finals, in which the Saxon participants for the 1st East Zone Championship were determined. The SG unit qualified with a 3-1 victory over SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt . In the East Zone Championship, the Meeraner played three games and reached the semi-finals, where they lost 5-2 to SG Freiimfeld Halle . The best Meeraner goalscorer was Wolfram Starke with four goals. In 1949, unit Meerane was runner-up in Saxony and was thus again eligible to compete in the 1949 Eastern Zone Championship . After a 3-2 win over SG Babelsberg , the Meeraner came back to the semi-finals, this time losing to Fortuna Erfurt 3-4 in extra time. With his three goals Starke was again the best goal scorer at Meeraner.

On August 27, 1949, the sports community Einheit was converted into a company sports community (BSG) with the same name, including other Meeraner sports communities . As a result, in addition to soccer, other sports sections such as athletics, horse riding, swimming, table tennis and gymnastics were added over time. On February 23, 1951, the name was changed with reference to the carrier company VEB Segeltuch-Industrie Meerane (later VEB Technische Textilien) in BSG Progress. By participating in the East Zone Championship in 1949, the soccer players of the BSG unit were qualified for the East Zone Soccer League, which was held for the first time in 1949/50 (from 1950 GDR Oberliga ). By 1955, the Meeraner BSG was represented in five seasons in the zone / major league, interrupted by the 1952/53 season by the league relegation in 1952. Their last league season 1954/55 ended the BSG progress beaten as bottom of the table with only five wins but three draws 18 defeats and a goal difference of 31:58. The most noticeable players from the Oberliga era include Wolfgang Lichtenstein and Wolfgang Starke, who played the most league games with 131 appearances each and scored the most goals with 40 (Starke) and 33 (Lichtenstein) goals.

+ From 1955 to 1960 Meerane played six seasons in the single-track GDR league. In 1955 the first place was reached, which due to the simple transition round - introduction of the games in the calendar year - did not entitle to promotion to the league. After that, the places 4th, 7th, 6th and 11th were occupied in the sequence. In 1960 the 14th place and 2 points meant relegation to the 2nd GDR league. In 1961/62 three series were played due to the return to the annual system. Meerane could in season 4 with the 14th u. last place do not avoid another relegation.

About the district league (third class after the elimination of the 2nd GDR league) there was a further descent in 1963 to the now fourth class district class Karl-Marx-Stadt . It was not until 1967 that the BSG progress returned to the third division district league, after which it was constantly commuting between third and fourth division. In the last season of the GDR football game operation in 1989/90, the Meeraner footballers reached fourth place in the district class. Bernd and Werner Krauss started their successful careers in the offspring of BSG Progress , in which both later became GDR champions with FC Carl Zeiss Jena .

During the 1989/90 season, the system of company sports associations collapsed as a result of the changed economic conditions in the GDR due to the political change . The VEB Technische Textilien Meerane stopped the financial and logistical support for the BSG Progress, so that one was forced to restructure the BSG into a registered association under German law. With reference to the sports association founded in 1907, the "Meeraner Sportverein 07" was brought into being. In the period that followed, he concentrated on football without reaching the higher class again. In the 2000/01 season the Meeraner SV achieved the greatest success for one season with promotion to the sixth-class district league Chemnitz. Then it went down to the ninth-class district league West Saxony, in which Meerane played between 2016 and 2018. The first team is currently competing in the eight-class national class (as of 2019).

Stadion

Meeraner SV uses the Richard Hofmann Stadium in the north-west of the city. It offers space for 8,000 spectators, has spectator cross members on the north and south sides, a running track and a side square with artificial turf. After the footballers had used the Karl Liebknecht sports field (formerly Red Hill) until 1956, a new stadium was built in 1956, one year after the BSG Progress football team's final league descent, as part of the national construction work . The inauguration game on June 5, 1956 against GDR league competitor Chemie Glauchau attracted 20,000 spectators, a record that was never broken. The sports facility was initially called the “Stadium of Friendship” and was renamed “Richard-Hofmann-Stadion” in 1991.
