Hugo Goethe
Hugo Goethe (born January 6, 1923 ) is a former German football player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played from 1949 to 1954 for the BSG Einheit / Progress Meerane .
Athletic career
When in 1949 the SG Einheit Meerane took part in the soccer east zone championship for the second time since 1948 , the 26-year-old striker Hugo Goethe was also on the squad. He scored the leading goal of the Meeraner in the 3-2 victory over SG Babelsberg in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals, the SG unit was eliminated after a 3: 4 defeat against Fortuna Erfurt . By participating in the East Zone Championship, however, the team had qualified for the first season of the newly founded East Zone League, later the GDR Oberliga. In the 1949/50 season, unit Meerane went as a company sports community (BSG) and Goethe was used as a striker in the point games from the start. He played 23 of the 26 games, scoring eight goals. Although he was not used in ten of the 34 league games in the 1950/51 season, Goethe hit the opposing goal ten times this time. In the course of the season, the BSG was renamed Progress Meerane. 1951/52 had to be played in the GDR Oberliga 36 games, of which Goethe missed only three games this season. However, his hit rate dropped to just four goals. At the end of the season, the BSG progress was determined as relegated to the GDR league , but managed to get promoted again immediately. Gothe was only able to contribute to this with eleven goalless appearances in the 24 league games in 1952/53. At the beginning of his fourth league season in 1953/54, Goethe was 30 years old. With the 23-year-old Peter Fischer , a new striker had been added to the squad of BSG Progress, and for coach Karl Haueisen , Goethe no longer played a role for the regular team. He was only used as a substitute in two league games, and this was repeated in the 1954/55 season, but there Goethe was twice in the first half of the season. After this season, the BSG progress was finally relegated from the league, and Hugo Goethe said goodbye to top-class sport. In the league he was used in 83 games and scored 22 goals. There are also eleven goalless appearances in the league plus a playoff for the second division title in 1953.
