Werner Krauss (born November 12, 1938 in Meerane ) was a football player in the GDR . He played for SC Motor / FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the Oberliga , the top division of the GDR football association. With Jena he was twice soccer champion.

Krauss grew up in the Saxon industrial city of Meerane and began there with the company sports association progress with football. After finishing school he learned to be a car mechanic. After he had become eligible to play for the men's division, Krauss played with the progress team until 1960 in the second-rate GDR league . When Meerane was relegated to the second GDR league, Krauss moved to the GDR league club Wismut Gera in 1961 . He played there for two years, then the region’s football focus, SC Motor Jena, became aware of the 1.77 m tall midfielder, who was particularly noticeable in the Gera district selection. The sports club arranged for Krauss to be delegated to Jena at the beginning of the 1963/64 season.

In the previous season, Motor Jena had won the soccer championship with a six-point lead. So Krauss came into a well-rehearsed team with several national players. Nevertheless, coach Buschner used him in the Oberligaelf from the start, and with 19 appearances Krauss was one of the players in his first season. Usually he occupied the right midfield, but was also in attack several times. The trainer used his versatility to use him frequently as a jumper in the following years.

In a newspaper interview in 1970, however, Krauss stated : “I really like to play cleaner when I have the whole thing in front of me. The leg work is one of my strengths. If you don't have to trample your opponent on the feet, find time to intervene to support the attack, then I love the defensive game. "(Deutsches Sportecho, January 19, 1970)

That year, Krauss and his team, which had been FC Carl Zeiss Jena since 1966, became champions for the second time. In contrast to his first championship season in 1967/68, in which he had only played twelve point games, Krauss was used in all championship games in 1969/70. However, he was now nearly 32 years old and his career was drawing to a close. 1970/71 he came ten league games, in his last season 1971/72 there were only five missions. When he said goodbye to high-performance sport in the summer of 1972, he could look back on the following balance sheet:

  • 166 league games (20 goals)
  • 25 games in the GDR soccer cup (4)
  • 17 European cup matches (2)
  • 2 GDR championship titles (1968, 1970)

Werner Krauss missed winning the GDR soccer cup , because in the 1972 final (2-1 over Dynamo Dresden) he was no longer part of the regular squad. In contrast, his record in the European Cup games is remarkable: In Krauss' time, his club played 22 European Cup games, Krauss was in 17 games. One of his most important goals was the goal scored on May 25, 1968 in the 69th minute in the league game against FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, with which he finally secured the championship title for FC Carl Zeiss.
