Rudolf Baumgart (born September 27, 1927 ) is a former German football player who was active from 1949 to 1952 for Unity / Progress Meerane in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

With the sports community Einheit Meerane, 21-year-old Rudolf Baumgart was runner-up in the Saxon football championship in 1949. The Meeraner had thus qualified for the second time after 1948 for the Eastern Zone Championship, in which they advanced to the semi-finals. At the same time, the team was eligible to start the first season of the newly introduced East Zone League (later GDR Oberliga). The previous sports community went into the 1949/50 season as a company sports community (BSG) unit and with defender Baumgart in the squad. This was used 17 times in the 26 point games, whereby he had to suspend several games in the second half. When he was exceptionally called up in midfield in the last game of the season, he scored his first goal in GDR-wide first division football. In the 1950/51 season, in the course of which the Meeraner BSG was renamed Progress Meerane, Baumgart was only used from the 7th day of the game, but then played the remaining games in the division, now known as the GDR Oberliga, except for one game came to 27 of the 34 played point games. Although Baumgart personally achieved the best league result in his third first division season 1951/52 with 33 appearances in 36 point games, the season ended negatively for the BSG progress with relegation from the league. The Meeraner only needed a year to return to the league as a season winner in the GDR league . Baumgart was involved with 23 of 24 games and four goals. Apart from three encounters at the end of the first half of the season, Baumgart was able to complete all other games in his fourth league season 1953/54 and scored the most goals of his season with six goals in his league career. This he had to end early in 1954/55, because he could only be used until the 15th matchday, and at the end of the season, the BSG progress was determined again as relegated. In autumn 1955, a transition round was held in GDR football to switch from the summer-spring rhythm to the calendar year season. In the GDR league progress Meerane had to play 13 games in which Baumgart was called up seven times. In the following seasons of 1956 and 1957, Baumgart was only operational once or nine times and in 1958, at the age of 31, went into his last GDR-wide season. He swung himself up again to the old level of performance and was able to participate in 23 of the 26 GDR league games. Then he ended his career as a competitive athlete, in which he had played 115 league games with eight goals and 63 GDR league games with four goals. In 1949 he also played in the Saxony state selection.
