Athletic career

Until 1951 Heinz Thate played for the company sports association (BSG) Sachsenring Hohenstein-Ernstthal in the fourth-class district class Chemnitz. After the team's relegation, the 21-year-old moved to the top division progress Meerane, where he was used as a midfielder in 15 matches in the 18 games of the second half of the season. In the last two games of the season he came to one goal each. The BSG progress had to relegate to the second-rate GDR league at the end of the season , but managed to get up there again. Thate was involved in it with 19 appearances in 24 league games and with three goals. In his second league season in 1953/54 he missed only one game of the 28 point games, but remained as a midfielder without scoring. 1954/55 he was the only player on his team who was used in all 26 league games. He played again in midfield and scored his third league goal. At the end of the season, progress Meerane was finally relegated from the league, and for Thate it meant the end of his league career. Until 1959 he played for the BSG Progress in the GDR league. First, he played all 13 games of the transition round played in the fall of 1955 to switch to the calendar year rhythm. In the GDR league seasons 1956 and 1957 he was used in all 26 league games, 1956 he had his most successful season as a goalscorer with six goals. In his last two GDR league seasons he was missing only two or four times in the point games. After the end of the 1959 season, Heinz Thate ended the top-class sport after eight years in high-class football, in which he had played 68 times in the major league (three goals) and 130 times in the GDR league (ten goals). He returned to Hohenstein-Ernstthal , where he worked for some time as a junior coach at BSG Motor, the successor to BSG Sachsenring.
