Lok Erfurt was founded in 1927 under the name Reichsbahn-Turn- und Sportverein Erfurt . Until 1945, the club was always under-class within Central German football, and no participation in the Gauliga Mitte took place.

In 1945 the association was dissolved and re-established as SG Reichsbahn Erfurt . In the period that followed, further renaming to SG Nordstern Erfurt and SG Lokomotive Erfurt were carried out until 1949 . With the entry of the Locomotive Sports Association and the Deutsche Reichsbahn as the carrier company , the BSG functioned as the BSG Lokomotive Erfurt until the fall of the Berlin Wall .

On a sporting level, Lok Erfurt was briefly in the third or. fourth-rate district league Erfurt , but played no role in the rise to the GDR league . The greatest success in the club's history was the one-time participation in the FDGB Cup 1974/75 , in which the locomotive lost 2-0 to Cup defender Carl Zeiss Jena after victories over Motor Steinach and Kali Werra Tiefenort in the second main round . At the end of the seventies, Lok Erfurt sank again into the insignificance of GDR football.

With the withdrawal of the carrier company, Lok Erfurt withdrew from gaming operations in 1991 and started in the Erfurt city area the following year. The club has been functioning as ESV Lok Erfurt since 1992, and since then the club has been operating without exception. In 2009, he was promoted to the national class (7th division), from which one had to relegate in 2011. Currently (as of 2016/17) the 1st team plays in the ninth-class district league Erfurt-Sömmerda.
