FDGB Cup 1974/75
In the 1974/75 season the 24th competition for the FDGB soccer cup was held.
89 teams took part in the 1974/75 cup competition. After a qualifying round in which six GDR league players (second highest football class) competed against each other, the first main round was with 55 teams from the GDR league from the 1973/4 season, the two relegated teams from the upper league (top football class) and the 15 district cup winners from Carried out 1973/74.
All district cup winners had already been eliminated before the round of 16, with 1. FC Union Berlin and Motor Nordhausen only two GDR league players had reached the round of the last 16. In contrast, all the major league teams were still in competition. As in the previous two years, back and forth legs were played from the eighth to the semifinals. Because of this, the two league representatives failed in the second round.
Last year's cup finalists Dynamo Dresden and FC Carl Zeiss Jena met in the semi-finals . With 3: 1 and 0: 1, the Dresdeners moved into the final again, where they met the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau . The final took place for the first time since 1950 in the East Berlin Stadium of World Youth , which had also been designated for the future finals. Also for the first time, an FDGB cup final was decided by a penalty shootout .

Course of the game
Dynamo Dresden was the clear favorite in the Saxon Cup derby. The East Saxony had finished the previous league season in third place and offered three current national players with Dörner, Wätzlich and Häfner. Sachsenring Zwickau was only 7th and only goalkeeper Jürgen Croy as a national player in its ranks. In front of the final record crowd of 55,000 spectators, however, the Dresdeners could not cope with their favorite role from the start. The well-known midfield row with Häfner, Geyer and Ganzera did not find the usual rhythm, rather nervousness shaped the game of the Dynamos. On the other hand, the Zwickauers did not succeed in putting their opponents under pressure despite all their commitment. They were also unlucky that their midfielder Leuschner had to retire injured in the 11th minute. When Heidler scored the opening goal for Dresden in the 65th minute after Croy could only rebound an ambush shot from Kotte, the encounter seemed to be going as expected. However, the Zwickau had changed their game system in the meantime and were looking for the shortest route to the goal from midfield. Just eight minutes after the deficit, the West Saxony responded with the equalization by their goal scorer from the service Joachim Schykowski, who benefited from a deception by Dietzsch. Since none of the teams could force the decision up to the 90th minute, the final went into overtime. Although the Zwickau team now visually dominated the game, ten minutes before the end of extra time, Dynamo took the lead again thanks to the judge who was substituted in in the 80th minute. The Sachsenring team was not deterred, played all or nothing, and immediately before the final whistle, the Zwickau left wing Nestler was able to avert the impending defeat with the 2-2 after Hans Schykowski put his head down. This was the first time in the history of the GDR Cup to have a penalty shoot-out in a final. In this situation, Zwickau's goalkeeper Croy became the hero of the day. First he held Weber and Dörner's shots before converting the last penalty to make it 4-3.
