Roland Stemmler (born September 25, 1947 ) was a soccer player in Zwickau . For the company sports association (BSG) Motor / Sachsenring Zwickau he played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR football association. In 1975 he won the FDGB soccer cup with Sachsenring Zwickau .

Soccer career

Stemmler joined BSG Motor Zwickau in 1965, where he was initially used in the 2nd team. His first game in the GDR league he completed on the 6th game day of the 1967/68 season, September 16, 1967. In the game Motor Zwickau - 1. FC Union Berlin (1: 2) he was for the unfit Gerd Mattern joined the team as a midfielder. It was the only first division game that season, and in 1968/69, the BSG was now called Sachsenring Zwickau, Stemmler only played five league games, three times only as a substitute. By 1976 Stemmler had his regular place in the Zwickau defense and completed the majority of the point games.

At the end of the 1974/75 season, Sachsenring Zwickau won the GDR soccer cup for the third time in its history. Of the seven cup games preceding the final, Stemmler had played five games. In the final on June 14, 1975, he was the right defender in the Sachsenring team, which defeated the favorite Dynamo Dresden 4-3 after a penalty shoot-out . Then Sachsenring caused a sensation in the European Cup Winners' Cup . The Zwickau made it into the semi-finals, and only then were defeated by RSC Anderlecht with 0: 3 and 0: 2. Stemmler was used in all eight games.

After a series of 23 uninterrupted league games in the 1975/76 season, Stemmler was drafted into military service for six months in May 1976. From the end of October 1976 Stemmler was back on the ball in Zwickau and immediately took a regular place in the Sachsenring defense, usually as a stopper . By the end of the 1980/81 season, Stemmler played through in the major league without any significant interruptions. He played his last league games in the summer of 1982. From the 1st to the 6th match day of the 1982/3 season, the almost 35-year-old was used continuously as a right-back. Roland Stemmler made his last first division appearance on September 25, 1982 in the match between Wismut Aue and Sachsenring (6-0). He had come within 16 years to 292 league games in which he scored five goals as a pure defender.
