Ludwig Blank (born January 27, 1949 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga . In the highest East German soccer class, he played for Sachsenring Zwickau and won the GDR soccer cup in 1975 .

Blank, an electrician by profession, was a young player at the company sports community (BSG) Sachsenring Zwickau from 1969 . After two years he was on the first day of the second half of the 1970/71 season on March 13, 1971 his debut in the league. In the 1-0 home win over FC Carl Zeiss Jena, he was called up as a left midfielder. In the remaining twelve championship games, Blank was used in nine more matches in changing positions. Also in the following season 1971/72 he did not succeed in making the leap into the regular eleven, he only made eleven league appearances, in most cases as a substitute. That didn't change in the months that followed. It was only when Hartmut Rentzsch failed in the second half of the 1972/73 season that the 1.71 m tall Blank became a right winger. In this position he initially played until December 1973, but then moved to the left storm side. This position took over with the 1974/75 season Peter Nestler and Blank returned to the right winger. He had now finally won a regular place in the Sachsenring team, in 1974/75 he made 22 of the 26 possible league games.

This season also saw Zwickau's third cup win. Blank had only played two of the seven cup games up to the final, but was in the final against Dynamo Dresden on May 14, 1975. The encounter had to be decided by a penalty shootout . Blank almost missed the win because his penalty shot was saved. In the end, however, Zwickau won 4: 3 and Blank won the only title of his football career worth mentioning. After his mistake in the final, Blank became the team's hero in the subsequent competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup . After the Zwickau had already eliminated Panathinaikos Athens and Fiorentina, they met Celtic Glasgow in the quarter-finals. The two games ended 1: 1 and 1: 0, both goals from Zwickau were scored by Blank. He secured his team's entry into the semi-finals, where the eventual cup winner, RSC Anderlecht, ended up with his two victories (3-0 and 2-0) for Zwickau. Blank, however, who had played six of the eight EC games, earned the title "Schottentod".

In the league season 1975/76 there were frequent player and position changes in the attack game of the Sachsenring team due to the failure of Gerd Schellenberg . Blank was one of those affected, he was deployed in four different positions from April 1976 until his own failure. Also in the first half of the 1976/77 game year he had to commute between attack and midfield. In November 1976 he was drafted for six months of military service. In the following two years, Blank played mainly in midfield. In 1978/79, the now 30-year-old played 21 league point games, but was mostly only brought in as a substitute in the second half of the season. After the end of the season, Blank ended his career as a top division player after eight years. During this time he had played 136 point games and scored seven league goals.

In the summer of 1979 Blank registered with his previous Zwickau teammate Peter Nestler at the second-class BSG Motor Werdau , where he was again nominated as a striker. A year later he was withdrawn to midfield to return to attack again in 1982/83. During this season, Blank finally ended his career as a competitive athlete.

He let his career come to an end in the then third-rate district league team of Wismut Crossen , in which in the 1980s, thanks to good financial support from Wismut AG, some GDR upper league players of the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau were able to train and play under practically professional conditions.
