Gerd Schellenberg (born November 26, 1949 in Zwickau ; † August 20, 2018 there ) was a German football player. He was active in the GDR top division teams BSG Sachsenring Zwickau and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and played three times in the GDR national soccer team .
Athletic career
Schellenberg's football career began in the youth teams of BSG Motor in Zwickau , later renamed Sachsenring Zwickau. At the age of 18, he was used for the first time in the league team of West Saxony on December 9, 1967 in the league game between Hansa Rostock and Sachsenring Zwickau and made an excellent introduction with the 1-0 winning goal. In the same year, more precisely on April 16, he played his first game in the GDR junior national team , in which he played twelve games in the course of his young career. In 1968 he was a participant in the UEFA youth tournament, the unofficial European championship. At the finals held in France and Monaco, the GDR eleven were eliminated early on as the last group in group D. Schellenberg is at least responsible for two of the five East German tournament goals.
After he had also played six games with the GDR youth team up to 1970 , the 1.79 meter tall and 72 kg striker, who was able to run the 100 meters in 11.5 seconds, became a big league player in the early 1970s. Years also interesting for the senior national team. Since, as a rule, only players were considered for the national team who played in the specially funded football clubs, Schellenberg switched to FC Karl-Marx-Stadt immediately after the top division season 1973/74 and appeared in the provisional, 40-name contingent for the World Cup 1974 in the Federal Republic as an FCK player.
For the tournament in the neighboring country he was not nominated by the selection coach Georg Buschner , but in the first game after the World Cup finals on September 4, 1974, the game against World Cup third Poland , Schellenberg made his debut as a center forward. On his debut, which the GDR won 3-1, the trade journal fuwo noted the following about the attacker in the individual review : "'After a certain adjustment period, I felt really good." One noticed that. The way he quickly entered the penalty area, increasing his self-confidence, lets expect a lot more. The calm at the end will come with the selection process. ” Accordingly, Schellenberg was also involved in the next two international matches, but had no chance with the then well-known strikers ( Streich , Sparwasser , Vogel , Hoffmann ) after these three appearances to further establish itself in the national team.
In view of this perspective, Schellenberg ended his engagement in Karl-Marx-Stadt after a year and a half , where he had played in 26 league point games, in order to play again in the future at his native BSG Sachsenring Zwickau. The Zwickau were last landed in the league before FCK anyway. He played his last game for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt as a substitute on December 20, 1975 against FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder, the first after his return to Zwickau on March 6, 1976 against BSG Wismut Aue . By the end of April 1976, Schellenberg played six league games in Zwickau. Then he was drafted into the reservist service of the National People's Army for half a year . It was the result of his departure from a club team and the national team, which he had lost his special promotional status.
After six seasons, Schellenberg ended his career as a league player on September 25, 1982 in the point game at Wismut Aue (0: 6). In sixteen years he had made 320 top division appearances and is 28th in the league rankings. He played 294 point games for Zwickau, only national goalkeeper Croy is here with 372 appearances ahead of Schellenberg. Since he was mainly called up in midfield from 1979 in Zwickau, his total of 29 league goals (one for FCK) are limited.
To train off, Gerd Schellenberg went to BSG progress in 1982 for a year in Weida , 40 kilometers to the west , where he helped the team from the third-rate district league to rise to the GDR league .
Further career
He later worked for a brokerage agency and was elected to the board of directors of the BSG-Sachsenring successor FSV Zwickau in 2004. The former national player died in August 2018 after a serious illness.
