Martin Hoffmann (born March 22, 1955 in Gommern ) is a former German soccer player and soccer coach . He is one of the most successful players in GDR football . Hoffmann was the only player to take part in its three highlights in the 1970s - winning the 1974 European Cup, winning the 1976 Olympic gold medal and participating in the 1974 World Cup.

Athletic career

BSG and club stations

At the suggestion of his father, Hoffmann began playing football for the BSG activist Gommern when he was seven. From there he was delegated in 1966 to the nearby soccer focus of the region, 1. FC Magdeburg , and became a student at the Magdeburg children's and youth sports school. From 1971 he played for the FCM in the junior league .

Hoffmann made his first appearance in the men's area in the second team of the FCM in the league game of the second-rate GDR league on August 19, 1972. With another ten missions, he immediately fought for a regular place as a left winger. In the same season he was also used in the highest GDR league, the Oberliga . He made his debut on June 16, 1973, the third last game day of the season, at the game FCM - Wismut Aue. In the 3-1 win, he immediately scored his first league goal, and he was also successful with one goal in the two subsequent league games. In the next season 1973/74 the only 1.68 meter tall striker belonged to the upper division of the Magdeburg club with 23 of 26 possible point games. At the end of the season he celebrated his first championship title, followed by the second championship win in 1975. He had previously celebrated the greatest triumph of his club career on May 8, 1974 by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup (2-0 over AC Milan). After missing the GDR Cup in 1973, he won the FDGB Cup three times with the FCM between 1978 and 1983 .

Martin Hoffmann was active in the GDR league until 1985. As early as 1982 he had suffered a complicated knee injury that put him out of action for six months. In the following seasons he could only be used sporadically. Only in his penultimate league season 1984/85, in which he was now used as a defender, he was able to play again 19 of the 26 point games. In 1985/86 he was in the first eight games in the FCM starting XI, but did not return to the top division after the 1-1 draw against FC Carl Zeiss Jena on October 19, 1985, although he was still for the 1986 season / 87 in the top division of the Magdeburg team. After finishing high-performance sport, Hoffmann was able to look back on 256 league games (78 goals), 41 national cup games (12 goals) and 43 European cup games (13 goals).

Selection bets

Hoffmann was included in the squad of the GDR junior selection in 1972 . He played his first international junior match on July 29, 1972 at the youth friendship competition in Romania. In the goalless draw against North Korea, he played on the left attacking side. The GDR junior eleven finished 5th at the tournament this year. By June 1973 Hoffmann had completed 20 U-18 internationals, in which Magdeburg scored seven goals. The last one was the final defeat at the UEFA youth tournament , the unofficial European youth championship, in Italy against England (2-3 after extra time). This was followed by five games in the youth national team from September 1973 , during which he was observed and appointed by A-selection coach Georg Buschner .

Accordingly, Hoffmann's career in the GDR national team began at an early age , when he was nominated for a game of the East German team in Budapest at the age of 18 due to injuries to other players. On November 21, 1973, the FCM attacker made his debut in the international game Hungary - GDR (0: 1) in the Buschner-Elf.

He experienced his greatest success with the national team at the 1974 World Cup , when he was in the team that defeated West Germany 1-0. Together with Hans-Jürgen Dörner , Reinhard Häfner and Gerd Weber, he was one of the four players who from 1978 to 1979 played all eight qualifying games for the 1980 European Football Championship in the DFV team of coach Georg Buschner in Group 4 against the Netherlands, Poland , Switzerland and Iceland. In the 5-2 win against Switzerland on October 13, 1979 in Berlin, he scored three goals, a feat he had previously achieved in October 1977 in the GDR's 9-0 victory in World Cup qualification over Malta. Due to the 2: 3 defeat on November 21, 1979 in Leipzig in front of 92,000 spectators in the decisive game against the Netherlands, Martin Hoffmann's team gambled away into the final round. After Rüdiger Schnuphase from FC Carl-Zeiss Jena had brought the GDR 1-0 lead in the 17th minute and Hoffmann's Magdeburg teammate Joachim Streich increased it to 2-0 with a foul penalty in the 33rd minute, the two-time vice world champion of the years decided 1974 and 1978 with two goals in the second half by Cornelis "Kees" Kist and René van de Kerkhof the game for themselves and thus moved into the finals. By 1981 Hoffmann had 66 full internationals.

Hoffmann was able to book a big title with the Olympic selection . With the 3-1 victory over Poland in the final of the Olympic football tournament in 1976 Hoffmann won the gold medal with the GDR selection. With his goal to 2-0 in the 14th minute, he played a decisive role in this final victory. For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. With the Olympic selection, he played ten official games - five each in qualifying for Montreal and five in the finals in Canada.

Coaching career

In 1987, shortly after his active time, Hoffmann had obtained the sports teacher diploma at the DHfK in Leipzig. He then began his career as a coach at 1. FC Magdeburg. Between 1988 and 1993 he worked as a junior and assistant trainer for the Magdeburg team. From August 1994 to February 1996 he was head coach of the Magdeburg club. After his release in 1996 he coached Parchimer FC for six months .

In 1998 he was again assistant coach at FCM. From 2008 to 2013 Hoffmann looked after the U-19 team at 1. FC Magdeburg.
