The SV Eintracht Gommern is a sports club in the small town of Gommern near Magdeburg in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . With 900 members and twelve sports departments, the club is the largest sports club in the Jerichower Land district . It offers, among other things, the sports of soccer, handball, volleyball, athletics, table tennis and bowling.

Club history

SV Eintracht traces its history back to the Gommeraner men's gymnastics club founded in 1865 and the football club VfB Gommern, which was founded in 1925. Both associations were dissolved after the Second World War as part of the general ban on associations initiated by the Soviet occupying forces in 1945. Initially, sports competitions were only permitted at city and district level and the formation of loosely organized sports communities was allowed. Such a sports community was also founded in Gommern, which mainly organized football matches. After the sports traffic in East Germany could be carried out supra-regionally, the sports community took on more solid organizational forms and on November 28, 1948, gave itself the name Eintracht Gommern.

At the same time, sport in East Germany was reorganized in the form of company sports associations (BSG), and every larger company was obliged to set up such a BSG for its employees. After contact was established between SG Eintracht and the geology equipment factory based in Gommern, the BSG activist Gommern was founded on June 27, 1953 with the geology work as the sponsoring company. The BSG started with 220 members and set up sports sections for football, bowling, chess, table tennis and gymnastics. Over the years the sports of judo, handball, athletics and volleyball were added. With the help of the sponsoring company, the Gommern Sports Forum was built, which was finally completed with the inauguration of the sports hall on December 13, 1974. The facility included three sports fields, two sports halls and a computer-aided 4-lane bowling facility. With 950 members, the BSG Aktivist developed into the second largest sports community in the Burg district.

Due to the change in economic conditions as a result of the political change in 1989, the sponsoring company stopped supporting the BSG. Since at the same time civil associations could be founded again in East Germany , members of the BSG Aktivist founded the registered association Sportverein Eintracht Gommern on September 27, 1990.

Development of the sport of football

Up to the end of the Second World War, football played a subordinate role in Gommern. SG Gommern, founded after the war, took part in the state championship in Saxony-Anhalt in 1947/48, but was able to qualify for 5th place in the Magdeburg district relay neither for the soccer east zone championship in 1948 nor for the state championship of the following season. Even after the introduction of the new soccer leagues at the GDR and district level, the BSG activist initially remained below the level of the third- or, at times, fourth-rate district league . It was not until 1961 that they were promoted to the Magdeburg district league, which at that time was still fourth. Due to the reduction of the district league from two to one season, the BSG had to be relegated again after a year despite a 10th rank. It succeeded, however, the immediate rise, and then activist Gommern was represented with the exception of the seasons 1969/70 and 1970/71, due to a renewed relegation, until 1982 in the now third-rate district league. In 1975 and 1977 Gommern failed with second place in the district championship. In 1982 the BSG Aktivist was bottom of the table and had to relegate for the third time from the district league and then did not make it again until the end of the GDR football game in 1990.

The BSG activist Gommern was able to qualify four times for the GDR-wide FDGB soccer cup competition . Until 1960, when the team only failed in the second cup round at the third division Vorwärts Leipzig, the BSG did not get beyond the first round:

1958: Activist Gommern - Motor Altenburg 2: 4
1960: Activist Gommern - Chemie Wittenberge 3: 1
Activist Gommern - Forward Leipzig 0: 1
1977: Activist Gommern - Chemie Veritas Wittenberge 5: 7 n.V.
1983: Activist Gommern - Stahl Thale 1: 2

After the introduction of the DFB game system in East Germany in 1991, SV Eintracht has not yet reached the level of the association league. In 2001 the team rose to the then sixth class national league, from which they relegated to the 8th national class after the 2008/09 season. In 2008, the soccer department took part in soccer matches with two men's and six junior teams.
