FDGB Cup 1980/81
The games for the FDGB Cup 1980/81 were the 30th edition of this competition.
The fight for the FDGB Cup in 1981 began with a qualifying round with four teams from the second-rate GDR league . In the first main round from the 1979/80 season, the 15 district cup winners, the two relegated from the GDR Oberliga and 55 GDR league players took part. After an intermediate round, the 14 upper division representatives intervened in the second main round. They met the remaining 17 GDR league teams and the last representative of the district cup winners Motor Limbach-Oberfrohna. This retired as well as the league teams from Stahl Riesa and Sachsenring Zwickau .
With BSG Chemie PCK Schwedt , Vorwärts Dessau , Vorwärts Stralsund and Wismut Gera , four teams from the GDR league were in the round of 16. However, none of them got any further. Cup defender FC Carl Zeiss Jena was also eliminated on penalties against their opponent at the time, FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . This in turn had to give up in the quarter-finals after a 0-1 home defeat against the new GDR champions BFC Dynamo .
But the champions did not reach the final either, because they lost to FC Vorwärts Frankfurt on penalties. The second finalist was 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig with an effortless 2-0 win over Dynamo Dresden .
All encounters were played in the knockout system. Games that were tied after regular playing time were extended and then decided by penalty shoot-outs if necessary.

Course of the game
The 30th cup final contested the two table neighbors from the midfield of the Oberliga, FC Vorwärts Frankfurt in 5th and 1. FC Lok Leipzig in 6th place. In Leipzig, Dieter Kühn was missing an important regular player. Although the Frankfurt team had to forego an asset with the injured regular center forward Conrad, they took the initiative from the start. With her three-man storm and the four-man midfield, she outnumbered the Leipzigers who played with only two tips and were able to effectively build up pressure. This was reinforced by Libero home, who pushed continuously over the middle line. He had the first chance to score with a header in the fourth minute. With their constant smacking, the three Frankfurt attackers Gramenz, Pietsch and Otto caused confusion in the opposing defense, which at first only knew how to help itself by getting on hard. Frankfurt's style of play led to success in the 17th minute when midfielder Andrich was able to exploit a combination over Jarmuszkiewicz and Otto. Then the forward players had numerous other opportunities to increase their lead until the break whistle. In the 35th minute, Leipzig goalkeeper Müller was only able to fend off a shot from Gramenz with difficulty. Ten minutes after the restart, the game of FC Vorwärts flattened in an inexplicable way, while 1. FC Lok now appeared much more determined. Zötzsche and Liebers, two players from the backcourt, turned the game around within three minutes. It is worth seeing Liebers' goal to 2: 1, in which he first stopped the ball with his chest and quickly surprised goalkeeper Kreutzer with a 20-meter shot. Then the Frankfurt game fell apart completely. When Fritsche converted a foul penalty to 3-1 in the 68th minute, the game was already decided. The penalty awarded by Jarmuszkiewicz made clear the despondency of the forward players, on the other hand, Moldt set the 4-1 final point in the 79th minute with a again worth seeing Hechtflug header in the 79th minute.
Locomotive trainer Scherbaum sums up the game as follows: “Solo performances by Zötzsche and Liebers released a lot of strength, of which nothing was felt before the change. The FCV was a strong opponent who was very evenly occupied in midfield. But in the end we played more successfully. "
