Ralph Probst (born August 5, 1954 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga . In the top division of the GDR Football Association , he played for FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) and 1. FC Union Berlin . Probst is a six-time young national player of the GDR.

Athletic career

offspring

Ralph Probst grew up with six brothers, who later also played soccer, in Meuselbach in southern Thuringia . Here he began his football career in 1962 at the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Meuselbach. After he had also played in the regional youth team, he switched to the junior team of the nearby BSG Motor Steinach in 1971 . He completed an apprenticeship as a construction machinist and in the same year he played with Steinach in the men's division in the second-rate GDR league . After 19 league games in 1971/72 and 17 other missions in 1972/73, Probst was called up three times in Steinach at the beginning of the 1973/74 season before continuing his career at FCV in the Frankfurt / Oder district .

FC Forward Frankfurt (Oder)

From 1973 to 1985 Probst was a player in the top football club of the GDR Army Sports Association , FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder). There he played with the exception of the 1978/79 season (relegation to the GDR League) in the GDR Oberliga. His first league game was the match on the 6th match day of the 1973/74 season between BSG Chemie Leipzig and FC Vorwärts (1-1) on September 15, 1973. He came on in the 69th minute for Jürgen Piepenburg . In the spring of 1974, at the age of 19, he was accepted into the squad of the GDR youth national team, with which he played six international matches until 1976. He was used in the U-21 team in all parts of the team, but could not prevail as a regular player.

A regular place in the league team of FC forward conquered the 1.75 meter tall Probst in the second half of the 1975/76 season, when he played all the point games in the position of right defender. He kept this position until his departure from FC Vorwärts. With consistent form and spared injuries, he only missed twelve point games from winter 1976 to summer 1985. After he had completed his last competitive game for the army team on June 1, 1985 with the game of the last day of the season, BFC Dynamo against FC Vorwärts (2: 1), he had 235 league games with four goals. Probst also scored four goals in the GDR league season 1978/79, in which he had played all 22 championship games and was also used in the entire eight promotion games. Of the twelve UEFA Cup matches that FC Vorwärts played between 1974 and 1984, he played ten games. In June 1985 Probst was discharged from the army with the rank of lieutenant.

1. FC Union Berlin

Now almost 31 years old, Probst joined the league promoted 1. FC Union Berlin for the 1985/86 season. There, too, he usually played as a right defender for a year and a half. In the first half of the 1987/88 season he was used in the first ten league games as a Libero , then his age made itself felt and he increasingly came into the role of a substitute player. In his last league season in 1988/89 he only came on from the 5th to the 7th match day as a substitute and ended his career as a competitive athlete at the end of 1988. With his 76 league games for 1. FC Union Berlin (two goals), Probst increased his account in the East German elite class to 311 games and six goals. Only 34 players have played more games in the history of the highest GDR league.

Cup drama

In addition to his over 300 league and ten European cup games, Probst also played 58 GDR cup games , 44 of them for FC Vorwärts Frankfurt and 14 for 1. FC Union Berlin. He reached the cup final three times, in 1976 and 1981 with FC Vorwärts, and in 1986 with 1. FC Union. Each time the opponent was 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , and Probst and his team lost in all three matches. On May 1, 1976 , playing right defender, he lost 3-0. At the second attempt on June 7, 1981 , Probst was in the central midfield, there was a 1: 4 defeat, and Probst was substituted in the 70th minute. With Union there was on May 31, 1986 against Lok Leipzig with 1: 5 the third and clearest defeat. This time Probst played in the right midfield and had the slight consolation that he was able to score the consolation goal in Berlin to make it 3-1 in the 81st minute .

Coaching career

In January 1989 Probst began to play for the BSG Housing Combine in Berlin in the third-rate district league . At the end of September 1989 he fled the GDR via Hungary and settled in West Berlin . There the former civil engineer began retraining to become a physiotherapist and played football for the Berlin league club Schwarz-Weiß Spandau until 1992. After a short interlude in 1992 at FC Viktoria in Frankfurt, the successor club of FC Vorwärts, Probst played for the state division club SV Empor Berlin until 1995 . In the meantime he had found professional prospects at the rehabilitation center of the Virchow Clinic in Berlin-Wedding.
