Course of the game

With 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, the final had a clear favorite, because the runner-up of the top division season just ended met the championship seventh with 1. FC Union Berlin. 1. FC Lok was able to offer an experienced team with five current national players against last year's league promoted team. Union could only throw its home advantage into the scales and came up with the recommendation to have eliminated the defending champion Dynamo Dresden in the semifinals.

The Leipziger quickly got their game going. While the young Union players tried in vain to get their respective opponents under control, Lok had already created three good chances in the first half hour. Leipzig's young midfielder Uwe Bredow stood out in particular, he pushed the offensive of his own team urgently. It was left to another midfielder to achieve the well-deserved lead for 1. FC Lok in the 30th minute. Altmann played the entire seemingly petrified Union defense and overcame goalkeeper Matthies, although he had still reached the ball with his fingertips. The Berliners did not stay in shock for long, only a few minutes later Leipzig goalkeeper Müller had to risk disbelief against Berlin's left winger.

Union coach Schäffner sent his team into the second half with the motto to employ the Leipzig cover more intensely and to limit its forward thrust. But his plans were thrown overboard after just six minutes. With a violent shot from the edge of the penalty area and shot with his weaker right leg, midfielder Zötzsche surprised the Berlin defense and scored the 2-0 for 1. FC Lok. Despite a double change at Union, Lok finally won control of the field. While Berlin was trying to escape to the front, the people of Leipzig switched their game to counterattack, pushed into the free spaces at lightning speed, looking for the shortest route to the goal. While midfield players had previously scored the goals, center forward Hans Richter was in great form and scored three more goals within 23 minutes. The only thing left for the Berliners was the recognition that they had never stuck it on, they then managed a cosmetic improvement thanks to Probst's acrobatic header hit, which was 3: 1 in the meantime. In the 76th minute, 1. FC Lok Lutz Moldt came on as a substitute, making it his last competitive game for his team.

The winning coach Ulrich Thomale judged after the end of the game: "With two teams that were attacking, we made good use of our potential and dominated due to the team unity."
