Course of the game
There was no real favorite in the eighth FDGB Cup final, the upper league fifth (Dresden) played against the ninth (Leipzig). Initially, the Leipzig had clear advantages, as they managed to gain dominance in the midfield. As a result, their strikers always had good chances to score, Scherbarth alone had the opportunity to score three times. The Dresden game was initially designed too cumbersome, due to numerous bad passes, the Dresden strikers could not get a move. In the 60th minute, Scherbarth finally succeeded in converting the superiority of his team into success. After Leipzig's left winger Behne had overflowed his opponent Albig, his pass reached the Leipzig center forward, who made it 1-0. Then Dresden's coach Siegert changed his team, took his half-forward Walter back into midfield and ordered Pfeifer to attack. A stroke of luck, because eight minutes later Pfeifer scored the equalizer after a free kick with his head. Gradually the Dresdner conquered more of the game, because they were operating more forcefully and the Leipzigers were losing strength. Until the 90th minute, however, no team managed to score, so it went into overtime. Dresden remained the leading team and had good chances to score in the last quarter of an hour through Matthes and Walter. Her winning goal in the 113th minute was more than happy. The starting point was the squire, who had recently been substituted on, whose sharp input Matthes extended towards the goal. The Leipziger Söllner tried to stop the ball, but it bounced off his leg unbearably into the Leipzig goal.
