Dieter Sommer (born May 12, 1937 in Goschütz , Silesia ) was a soccer goalkeeper in the highest GDR soccer class, the Oberliga . There he played for activist Brieske-Senftenberg , SC Lokomotive Leipzig and Chemie Leipzig . He then worked as a soccer coach.

Athletic career

Sommer began his sporting career as a 12-year-old goalkeeper in the Leipzig youth handball team Motor Gohlis Nord . In 1951 he switched to the Gohliser youth football team. In 1954 he joined the SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg, whose men's team played in the major league. At the age of 17 he played his first league games there. During this season he was also used in two international matches for the GDR junior national team. After summer had played eleven times for Brieske in the league until 1956, he went back to Leipzig and became goalkeeper of SC Lok Leipzig at the beginning of the 1957 season. In 1960 he was three times in the goal of the B national team. Between 1958 and 1962 he played six trade fair cup games for the Leipzig city selection . By May 1963, Sommer had played 77 league games for Lok Leipzig. Football was then reorganized in Leipzig. The supposedly best players of the two league clubs were united in the new SC Leipzig , the rest were assigned to the secondary company sports association Chemie Leipzig. Sommer was part of the “rest of Leipzig”, with whom he surprisingly became GDR champion in 1964. However, he was only in goal seven times this season because he had been injured for a long time. Even in the following seasons, Sommer was no longer number one in the chemistry goal, and so he also missed the victorious cup final in 1966 (Chemie Leipzig - Lok Stendal 1-0).

After the 1967/68 season, summer ended his career as an active football player. In 14 years he had a total of 125 point games in the GDR league. He then began to work as a trainer, initially for the 2nd team at Chemie Leipzig. After intermediate stops in Schwedt and Böhlen, Sommer was coach of the first team of Chemie Leipzig at the beginning of the 1978/79 season. The Leipziger played for two years in the second-rate GDR league , but Sommer managed straight away to return the team to the league. However, she was only able to stay there for a year, and when it became apparent at the end of 1980 that the re-promotion would fail, Sommer was released again. In 1985, Sommer took over the district league team Robotron Sömmerda , whom he led in 1987 for promotion to the GDR league. A year later he was also released here.
