Gottfried Matthes (born March 26, 1938 ; † April 27, 2019 ) was a German football player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he was active for SC Einheit Dresden , BSG Motor Zwickau and Dynamo Dresden . With the SC unit he was 1958 cup winner, and he played several international games with the GDR youth and the B national team.

Athletic career

At the age of 19, Gottfried Matthes played his first games in the GDR league in the 1957 season (calendar year season) at SC Einheit Dresden. Initially, he benefited from the failures of the standard striker Felix Vogel and the attacker Heinz Nicklich , so that he made eleven league appearances in his first league season and with his five goals already indicated that he was dangerous. The 1958 season was already the most successful year in Matthes' football career. As a striker, he played all 26 league games, was the top scorer in Dresden with eight goals together with Felix Vogel and was appointed to the GDR youth national team. With her he completed three internationals in 1958 and then two more in 1961. On December 14, 1958, he won the GDR soccer cup with SC unit after a 2-1 win in extra time over SC Lok Leipzig . Matthes was called up as a half-left striker. In 1959 he only made 20 league appearances, but was nevertheless this time the sole top scorer of the SC unit with nine goals. In the 1960 season he shared the top scorer's crown again with Felix Vogel, both of whom had six goals. Of the 26 league games, Matthes only missed one game. He then surprisingly switched to the league competitor Motor Zwickau.

In 1961, GDR football switched back to the summer-spring game rhythm, and the league had to play a 39-round season by June 1962. Matthes was also used as a striker in Zwickau, but could not be called up in the last third of the season. He played only 24 of the 39 games in which he scored five goals. During the season he was used in two international matches for the B national team.

In the 1961/62 season, SG Dynamo Dresden had fought to return to the league after a long period of abstinence. In order to be able to survive there, the team was strengthened with several experienced players in the upper league, among them Gottfried Matthes. However, he was only used in five league games in the first half of the season in 1962/63 and ended a season without a goal for the first time in his league career. The SG Dynamo, which had to relegate back to the GDR league after one season, also remained unsuccessful . There, Matthes managed to re-establish himself as a regular player, because he played all 30 point games, but only with one goal. Nevertheless, he was one of the guarantors for the immediate resurgence. The two following league seasons 1964/65 and 1965/66 were again disappointing for Matthes, because he was only used three or twice. Goals were a nil.

At the age of 26 he buried his hopes in the league and joined the FSV Lokomotive Dresden for the 1966/67 season . The successor to SC Einheit Dresden played in the GDR league and Matthes managed to become a regular again. Of the 30 games he played in the league, he played 22 games and was the top scorer of a Dresden team for the fourth time with eleven goals. In 1967/68 he was able to increase his point play rate again, because this time he came to 27 missions and was also relatively successful with five goals. At the age of 30 he went into his last season in high-class football. In 1968/69 he only made four league games and only scored one goal.
