Athletic career

In January 1954, the name Gerd Losert first appeared in national sports coverage when he was mentioned as a player in the BSG Rotation Dresden in a test match of the GDR youth team. In the same year the soccer section of the BSG rotation and with it the almost 20-year-old Losert was transferred to the newly founded SC Einheit Dresden. When a transition round to the calendar year rhythm was played in GDR football in the fall of 1955, the SC unit used Losert for the first time in league games in the GDR league. At the end of the transition round, coach Hans Siegert offered him in two games instead of regular striker Harry Arlt . In the 1956 season Losert captured a place in the starting line-up, favored by the failure of midfielder Heinz Nicklich . Losert took his place in midfield, played in 21 of the 26 point games played and scored three goals. Losert asserted himself as a regular player until 1960 and never missed more than five point games. In 1958 he played two internationals with the GDR national B team and was GDR Cup winner with the SC unit as central defender after a 2-1 win after extra time over the SC Lok Leipzig . It was one of the rare games in which Losert was in defense. During his entire league time Losert usually played in midfield. He played his last league season in 1961/62. GDR football wanted to return to the summer-spring rhythm in 1962/63, and before that, the league had to play a mammoth season with 39 games from March 1961 to June 1962. Losert could not be used in the first 14 league games and so only made 16 point games by the end of the season. At the end of this season, the SC unit Dresden was determined as relegated. After his 127 championship games and six goals in the league, Losert played three more seasons for the SC. While he was able to complete only four games in the GDR league in 1962/63 , he played 41 games in the 60 point games of the two following seasons and scored one more goal. In the summer of 1965 Gerd Losert retired from competitive sports. As a junior coach at BSG Motor Dresden-Trachenberge, he looked after his son Dirk Losert in the 1970s before he played for Dynamo Dresden and 1. FC Magdeburg in the GDR league in the 1980s .
