The sports club Rotation Leipzig was a sports club of the GDR sports system in Leipzig . It existed from 1954 to 1963, its successor was the SC Leipzig .

history

In order to enable a targeted development of high- performance sport, the DTSB decided on November 20, 1954 to found sports clubs (SC), whose sections were to function as performance bases for various types of sport. The SC Rotation Leipzig was founded in November 1954. It was the performance center of the Rotation sports association , in which the company sports associations of the printing industry and the publishing industry of the GDR were combined. The latter in particular was concentrated in Leipzig, which was the decisive factor in relocating the sports club to the trade fair city. The BSG Rotation Leipzig and its predecessors had existed independently of the club since 1950 .

Less than two years after it was founded, in July 1956, the SC Rotation was one of the strongest clubs in the GDR with 750 members in seven sections. By then he had produced 17 masters of the sport. In the second half of the 1950s, active athletes from several of the sections sponsored by competitive sport belonged to the absolute top of the GDR. When the sports club system was restructured in the early 1960s, it was decided that one sports club per district would be sufficient. As a result, SC Rotation and SC Lokomotive Leipzig merged in July 1963 to form the SC Leipzig district sports club . As the central club of the German University of Physical Culture , the SC DHfK Leipzig played a special role, so it continued to exist.

Sections

The sports club was divided into several competitive sports departments, so-called sections. Successful athletes or entire teams who had previously often belonged to a company sports community were delegated there . The SC Rotation Leipzig and its actors therefore became German champions of the GDR in various sports.

Soccer

The first men's team of the SC Rotation played their home games in the Bruno-Plache-Stadion throughout its existence . Exceptions were some city derbies against the SC Lokomotive Leipzig from Gohlis , which took place in the central stadium in Leipzig because of the enormous number of spectators . The game on September 9, 1956 between rotation and locomotive (1: 2) saw more than 100,000 spectators. This is still the record number of visitors for national soccer matches in Germany. The soccer section of the SC Rotation emerged from the soccer players of the BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig, who were promoted to the GDR league in 1953 . After barely preventing immediate relegation in their first league season , the footballers from Einheit Ost were delegated to the new sports club at the end of 1954. Rotation was based in the Leipzig district of Probstheida and is therefore seen today in the traditional line of VfB Leipzig from the prewar period, which had also played in the Bruno-Plache Stadium since 1922.

The 1954/55 season ended the rotationers trained by Heinz Krügel in third place. This was followed by the transition round in autumn 1955 . In 1956 , the SC Rotation landed in the middle of the table, in 1957 under Hans Studener again in third place. The remaining five seasons up to the 1962/63 season ended the team last trained by Martin Schwendler , whose clothing consisted of black shorts and white shirts, each in the lower middle of the table between ranks eight and eleven. In the FDGB Cup , she was eliminated in the round of 16 at the latest. The SC Rotation became GDR junior champion in 1961.

Former players of the SC Rotation Leipzig include Manfred Geisler , Hans-Jürgen Naumann , Arno Zerbe , Horst Lembke , Rainer Trölitzsch , Manfred Pfeifer , Horst Scherbaum , Horst Weigang , Werner Welzel and Wolfgang Klank . Internationally, from 1955 on, a Leipzig city selection made up of players from rotation and locomotive, initially supervised by the first rotation trainer Heinz Krügel, played in the European trade fair cup . Wolfram Löwe and Otto Skrowny were active for the Rotation Juniors, and Heinz Joerk was a successful trainer in the junior division .

When the soccer sections of Rotation and Lok Leipzig were united in the summer of 1963, the supposedly stronger players, including Geisler and Löwe, were taken over by the new SC Leipzig, from which the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig emerged in 1966 . The so-called "Rest of Leipzig", consisting of the supposedly weaker players, including Klaus Lisiewicz, Bernd Herzog and Wolfgang Behla, moved to the re-established BSG Chemie Leipzig and was GDR champion in 1963/64 under coach Alfred Kunze .

hockey

In the years around 1960, one of the most successful hockey sections in the GDR belonged to the SC Rotation, and SC Motor Jena was one of its main opponents at that time . The men celebrated three field hockey championship titles in a row from 1959 to 1961 . The 1959 championship team included, for example, Hans-Jürgen Matejka and the later international referee Walter Kupke . The women were successful in 1956 and 1962. In the same years and 1957, the women also won the indoor hockey championship. The men succeeded in doing this in 1958. The SC rotation achieved further successes in the all-German game traffic, which was still possible at the time, as well as in smaller tournaments. From 1959 to 1961, the indoor hockey men won the Wilhelm Höcker tournament in Güstrow, Mecklenburg, three times in a row . Until they were overtaken by host Lok Güstrow in 1977, they were record winners of the tournament.

athletics

The athletics section had successful athletes in several disciplines. Among them is sprinter Heinz Erbstößer , who was a single starter for rotation over 100 and 200 meters and was GDR champion in 1962 and vice-champion over 200 meters in 1959. In 1959 and 1962 he triumphed with the 4 x 100 meter relay of Rotation Leipzig, which won the runner-up title in 1961 without him. Horst Görlt won the championship title in the 3000 meter obstacle course in 1955. In the phase dominated by Manfred Matuschewski from Erfurt between 1959 and 1962, Rainer Petraschek was third three times over the distance of 800 meters. In 1960 Klaus Moser was third over 10,000 meters. In the cross-country long distance, Rotation Leipzig achieved a second and two third places in the cross-country long distance from 1958 to 1960 . The women's team came third on the short cross-country course in 1960.

Günter Lein was GDR high jump champion three times in a row from 1955 to 1957 and was most recently the all-German record holder by jumping over 2.04 m. In the years 1958 to 1960 he had to let Werner Pfeil from SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt come first, but achieved two runner-up titles and a third place. His club mate Gisela Winter was also high jump runner-up in 1959. Günter Malcher was fifth in the pole vault at the 1960 Olympic Games and third in the GDR championships in the same year. In 1957 and 1959 he was the GDR runner-up. Irmgard Müller was GDR champion in javelin throwing twice in a row in 1955 and 1956. Erika Allmann was runner-up over the 400-meter distance in 1960. Ruth Wiederhold was third in the discus throw in 1956.

swim

The swimmers of the SC Rotation were particularly successful in the second half of the 1950s at GDR championships. The women won three times in a row over 4 × 200 meters chest and in 1957 over 4 × 100 meters back and 4 × 100 meters medley in relays from 1956 to 1958. The men even won four championship titles in a row between 1955 and 1958 in the latter discipline, and from 1958 to 1960 they were also three times GDR champions over 4 × 200 meters butterfly. In 1956 and 1957 they won the title over 4 × 200 meters chest, in 1957 and 1958 over 4 × 100 meters back. They won the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay in 1955, and were runner-up in 1957, 1958 and 1960.

The most successful individual starters of the SC Rotation Leipzig were Konrad Enke , who was GDR champion over 200 meters chest four times in 1955 and from 1957 to 1959, and Wolfgang Sieber, who also won four championship titles over 200 meters butterfly from 1957 to 1959 and 1961. Karl-Heinz Engelhardt won the 400 meter freestyle title in 1958 and 1960. Karin Beyer was both GDR champion over 100 and 200 meters in 1961 and 1962. In the latter discipline, Eva-Maria ten Elsen had already won the title in 1956 . Other swimmers each won a championship title for SC rotation.

The Leipzig water polo players became the first GDR water polo cup winner in the history of this trophy in 1959 . In the same year and 1960 they were both GDR runner-up, 1961 and 1962 third.

Cycling

Manfred Jörke and Horst Busse won a youth championship title in August 1957 at the GDR championship in two-man team driving.

In 1958, the men's team with the drivers Egon Adler , Erich Mähne, Peter Göhle and Schröder won the 4000 meter pursuit, a year later they came second, and in 1962 they finally came third. Erich Mähne was also GDR tandem champion together with Klaus Freund in 1958 and 1959. In 1962, Rainer Schöne did the same, winning the championship title with his partner Rainer Marx from SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt . Nice club mates Tertschek and Erhard Pesch finished second, the latter also being the GDR champion over 1000 meters time trial. The trainer of the train drivers from SC Rotation was Ernst Ihbe , the 1936 Olympic champion in tandem driving with Charly Lorenz . The best-known road cyclist of the SC Rotation is Egon Adler, who took part in the Peace Ride several times and was team winner in 1960, won the silver medal in the 100 km team time trial at the Olympics in Rome and was also successful as a stalker. Also Lothar Höhne won as a road rider top places in various tours.

chess

In chess , too , the strongest players should be concentrated in the sports clubs. The first sports club with a chess section was the SC Wissenschaft Halle , which was the superior GDR team champion in 1954/55 . At a presidium meeting of the chess section of the German Sports Committee in July 1955, a new mode of competition was decided. According to this, four teams in a new special league should play a full Scheveningen system, i.e. three rounds with eight rounds each. In addition to the science hall, the other two chess performance bases from SC Einheit Dresden and SC Motor Berlin as well as another team to be set were planned. No chess section of a company sports association was able to meet the high requirements, which is why a fourth performance base was founded - at SC Rotation Leipzig, which in the following years was one of the absolute top teams in the GDR. A successful player of this time was Wolfgang Pietzsch , who was GDR single champion in 1959 and 1962 . Sieghart Dittmann took part in the 1960 Chess Olympiad in Leipzig. After a phase at SC Leipzig, the section became independent as the Leipzig chess community on December 1, 1967 .

volleyball

In volleyball, the women from Rotation Leipzig won the GDR championship title three times in a row from 1959 to 1961. They also won the trophy in 1957, 1958 and 1960 . The men were GDR champions in 1960 and 1962 .
