Eva-Maria ten Elsen , widowed Hartmann (born September 14, 1937 in Altenburg ), is a former German swimmer who won the first medal for a swimmer in the GDR at the Olympic Games in 1956 .

Career

Swimming career

She started at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 within the all-German team and won the bronze medal in the 200 meter breaststroke (2: 55.1 min). The Olympic champion of this competition was the West German swimmer Ursula Happe (2: 53.1 min).

Eva-Maria ten Elsen was 15 years old when she was a GDR champion in the 200-meter swimming pool in 1952 and 1953. In 1954 she became GDR champion on the 400-meter medley course, after which she switched to the 200-meter breaststroke discipline. In September 1956, shortly before the Olympic Games, she swam an annual world record (2: 53.3 min). She started for the SC Rotation Leipzig .

In 1960 she failed in the internal German elimination for the Olympic Games in Rome , and she ended her sports career in 1961.

Further career

In 1966 she graduated from the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) with a diploma, after which she worked as a trainer in a swimming training center. From 1971 to 1990 she worked for the GDR sporting goods fair Expovita . After the end of the GDR , she worked for a real estate company and a health insurance company .
