Sieghart Dittmann (born July 3, 1934 in Eibenstock ) is a German epidemiologist and chess player .

Sieghart Dittmann grew up in Chemnitz and Kirchberg (Saxony) . He went to the University of Leipzig to study medicine . He did his PhD on tuberculous meningitis . In 1979 he received his habilitation on the subject of vaccination complications . In 1982 he received the Rudolf Virchow Prize , a state award from the GDR . From 1983 he was a lecturer and professor for hygiene and epidemiology at the Hygiene Institute of the Berlin Charité . From 1985 to 1990 he was director of the Central Institute for Hygiene, Microbiology and Epidemiology in East Berlin . From 1992 he worked for the Robert Koch Institute , from 2001 to 2004 as deputy chairman of the permanent vaccination commission . He also headed the Infectious Diseases and Vaccination Programs Division of the WHO Regional Office for Europe .

Sieghart Dittmann learned to play chess at school at the age of ten. The Little Textbook of Chess by Jean Dufresne helped him to improve his playing strength .

Sieghart Dittmann was only active as a chess player from the 1950s to 1960. In 1960 he worked as a general practitioner in the St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig. Although his profession was very demanding, he was temporarily considered number two in GDR chess behind Wolfgang Uhlmann . However, he decided to focus on medicine. His club was the SC Rotation Leipzig .

In 1954 he won the GDR U20 Championship in Schkopau 2-1 in a playoff against Siegfried Mühlberg from Halle, after both were tied with 12 points after 16 games. Two years earlier at the all-German U20 championship in Sigmaringen , he had achieved fourth place. In 1956 he won the International Christmas Tournament in Vienna in front of the Yugoslav Grand Master Vasja Pirc and the Austrian Andreas Dückstein . With the national team of the GDR he took part in three chess Olympiads and two student world championships. At Chess Olympiads he played in 1956 on board 2, 1958 of board 3 and 1960 4 on board he took a total of 21 points from 41 games (+11 = 20 -10), with wins over Gideon Barcza and Heinz Lehmann should be emphasized.
