Andreas Dückstein (born August 2, 1927 in Budapest ) is an Austrian chess player .

Life

Andreas Dückstein lived in Budapest for 22 years. He was initially a gymnastics teacher and later earned a doctorate in law.

He won the Austrian state championship three times (1954, 1956 and 1977), but despite his successes remained an amateur throughout his life. In 1956, FIDE awarded him the title of International Master . He took for Austria in nine Chess Olympiads in the years 1956 bis 1988 in part, reaching in 1956 and 1974 respectively, the highest individual score on the second board. Dückstein took part in the European team championship with Austria in 1989 .

He won individual games against the world chess champions Max Euwe , Michail Botwinnik and Boris Spasski , but could not win any major international tournaments. As a senior he reached a third place at the 1991 World Chess Championship for seniors in Bad Wörishofen, which Vasily Smyslow won.

Dückstein was Austrian team champion in 1966 with SK Austria Wien , in 1967, 1968 and 1971 with SK Hietzing Wien and in 1993 and 1994 with SK Margareten , with whom he also took part in the 1993 European Club Cup . Other clubs in Dückstein are or were Tschaturanga Wien , SK Währing , SK Zwettl , SC Fischer Wien (from 1994 to 1996 in the State League A), Blackburne Nickelsdorf , SV Grimmenstein , SK Flötzersteig (from 1988 to 1990 in the State League A) and the 1 Wiener Neustädter SV (in the 1998/99 season in the State League A).

Dückstein published the book Masters of Tower Endgames (1890-1914) in 1979 (Wiener Schachverlag, Vienna 1979). According to the historical Elo number , he was in January 1957 at number 56 in the world rankings.
