The SK Zwettl , in the long form Schachklub Zwettl, is a chess club founded in 1987 in the municipality of Zwettl in Lower Austria . The club has been a member of the Austrian Chess League since the 2011/12 season .

history

SK Zwettl was founded on October 19, 1987. The first chairman was Gerhard Felbermayer. After initially playing in the lower classes, the club managed to move up to the Lower Austrian regional league in the summer of 1999, where third place was immediately achieved.

By winning the Lower Austrian state championship title in the 2004/05 season, the club was able to achieve its first major success, promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga East. SK Zwettl used the following players: FM David Holemar (Czech Republic; 1.5 points / 4 games), Neklan Vyskočil (Czech Republic; 6.5 / 8), IM Andreas Dückstein (Austria; 5.5 / 9), František Vykydal (Czech Republic; 9.0 / 11), Karl Janetschek (Austria; 7.0 / 10), Alfred Lipp (Austria, 6.5 / 9), František Blatný (Czech Republic; 7.5 / 11), Manfred Prager ( Austria; 2.5 / 5), Martin Zwettler (Austria; 6.0 / 10), GM Pavel Blatný (Czech Republic; 2.0 / 3), Petr Mlynek (Czech Republic; 2.0 / 3), Miroslav Pakosta (Czech Republic ; 2.5 / 3), Omer Pekmezovic (Bosnia; 0.0 / 1) and Peter Moscatelli (USA; 1.0 / 1).

The SK Zwettl was able to establish itself in the 2nd Bundesliga East in the following years. The club became an integral part of the second highest class.

Promotion to the Bundesliga

After the third place was reached in the 2009/10 season, the club had set their sights on the championship title in the 2010/11 season . Although the traditional SK Pamhagen , who even won the direct duel, and the SK Währing with the SK Zwettl an exciting three-way battle, but in the end the Waldviertel had outsell and got themselves two points clear at the league title. Thus, the SK Zwettl was qualified for the first time in the club's history. GM Tomáš Polák (Czech Republic; 6.0 points / 11 games), GM Pavel Blatný (Czech Republic; 5.5 / 11), IM Neklan Vyskočil (Czech Republic; 3.5 / 7), IM Petr Pisk (Czech Republic; 7.0 / 9), FM Petr Buchnicek (Czech Republic; 5.5 / 8), MK Stefan Wagner (Austria; 5.5 / 11), FM Karl Janetschek (Austria; 1.0 / 4), MK Martin Zwettler (Austria; 0 , 0/1) and Peter Stadler (Austria; 3.0 / 4) ensured the greatest success in the club's history to date.
