List of Austrian national champions in chess
The list of Austrian national champions in chess contains the winners of all Austrian individual championships for men and women in chess , which were organized by the Austrian Chess Federation (ÖSB).
Although the Austrian Chess Federation had already organized master tournaments for men from 1921 and for women in 1922 to determine an Austrian individual champion, professional players did not take part in these. In 1936, for example, Erich Eliskases won against Rudolf Spielmann in a first official competition for the title of master of Austria 5.5: 4.5. Eliskases also won the rematch in 1937 6-4. Both fights took place in Semmering , Lower Austria . Josefine Pohlner won the women's competition in 1922 , and Salome Reischer won in 1936 . Individual competitions organized by the Austrian Chess Federation with the title of national champion have existed since 1947, and a separate women's competition since 1950. At the 2018 national championship, both titles were played in one tournament for the first time. The 2019 state championships were embedded in the Vienna Open.
