Karl Röhrl

Karl Röhrl (born January 11, 1941 in Wilhelmsburg (Lower Austria) ; † February 25, 2016 there ) was an Austrian chess player. He was a FIDE champion and two-time Austrian national chess champion.

Life

Karl Röhrl achieved his first major chess success in 1960 as a youth champion at the Lower Austrian state championship. Further national championship titles in the general class followed in 1968, 1976 and 1983.

With his regular club SK St. Pölten Röhrl won the Lower Austrian regional league four times and played in the state league from 1982 to 1988 . In addition, he was a member of the Lower Austria selection at the federal state team championships in the 1970s.

In 1969 Röhrl first won the Austrian men's national championship ahead of Esra Glass and Franz Auer . The tournament was held in Haag am Hausruck in Upper Austria . In 1971 he repeated his success in Hartberg and won ahead of Georg Danner and Ferdinand Strobel.

Röhrl took part as a player in the Austrian national team at the Chess Olympiad in 1970 in German Siegen , 1972 in Skopje , Yugoslavia , 1974 in Nice, France and 1976 in Haifa , Israel .
