1976 Chess Olympiad

Chess Olympiad in Haifa

The 22nd Chess Olympiad 1976 was held from October 26th to November 10th 1976 at the Dan Carmel Hotel in Haifa .

Overview

The awarding of the 1976 Chess Olympiad in Haifa, Israel, posed some difficulties for FIDE President Euwe . The Swiss system , which was initially introduced on a test basis, did not meet with too much approval, especially among the strong chess nations. What weighed more heavily, however, was that the Soviet Union had no diplomatic relations with Israel at the time and sharply criticized the choice of the venue. Nevertheless, Euwe stuck to the decision. The Soviet Union and the associations from its sphere of influence boycotted the tournament. 34 teams took part in a counter-Olympiad in Tripoli , Libya .

In Haifa, 48 teams played in the open group and 24 teams in the women. The German men's team consisted of Wolfgang Unzicker , Luděk Pachman , Hans-Günter Kestler , Dieter Mohrlok , Peter Ostermeyer and Klaus Wockenfuß . Anni Laakmann , Hannelore Weichert , Thea Prill-Gassemann and Ursula Wasnetsky played for the women . The teams from Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Honduras and Bermuda made their Olympic debut.

Men's Chess Olympiad (Open Group)

Below is the final score as a complete progress table. The Chess Olympiad is a team tournament. In Haifa, 13 rounds were played in the open group according to the Swiss system. In the Swiss system, teams of the same rank are drawn from one another. Each team (team) could use four players per team fight. Four individual points (board points) are awarded per team fight, which are indicated in the following table of the thirteen rounds under the code of the opposing team. The code is a short key for the teams. The sum of the board points is under BP. The result of a team fight are the team points (win = 2, draw = 1, loss = 0). In addition, the numbers of won, undecided and lost fights are listed (+ = -).

Determination of the placement

The following ratings were used to determine the placement (Rg = rank).

  • BP (sum of board points)
  • MP (sum of team points)
  • Wrtg ( Buchholz rating )
