Dictionnaire Infernal
The Dictionnaire Infernal (German ' Hellish Dictionary') is a book of demonology , structured in hellish hierarchies. It was written by the occultist Jacques Albin Simon Collin de Plancy (1794–1881) and first published in 1818. There have been several editions of the book, but the most famous is that of 1863, in which 69 illustrations were added. These pictures are drawings that try to describe the appearance of the different demons . Many of these images were later used in SL MacGregor Mathers ' edition of The Lesser Key of Solomon ( Clavicula Salomonis ), although some of the images have been removed.
The book was split into two volumes when it was first published, with six reprints and many changes between 1818 and 1863. The book attempts to provide a representation of all knowledge about superstition and demonology.
On the title page of the 1826 edition, the content is stated as follows:
"Dictionnaire infernal ou Bibliothèque Universelle, sur les êtres, les personnages, les livres, les faits et les choses, qui tiennent aux apparitions, à la magic, au commerce de l'enfer, aux divinations, aux sciences secrètes, aux grimoires, aux prodiges, aux ereurs et aux préjugés, aux traditions et aux contes populaires, aux superstitions diverse, et généralement à toutes les croyances merveilleuses, surprenantes, mystérieuses et surnaturelles »
"Hellish dictionary or universal library, about beings, personalities, books, facts and things concerning manifestations, magic , dealing in hell , fortune telling , secret sciences, grimoirs , miracles, errors, prejudices, traditions and popular tales, various superstitions, and in general all sorts of wonderful, surprising, mysterious and supernatural ideas "
