Teide , the sacred mountain of the Guanches .

Guayota was the name of an evil demon in Guanche mythology . Guayota lived inside the Teide volcano .

The name "el Teide" originally comes from the language of the Guanches , the native inhabitants of the island, and was originally "Echeyde". It is the name for the dwelling of the demon Guayota. According to legend, Guayota is said to have captured the sun god Magec and kept it in his apartment. The Guanches then asked their supreme god, Achamán , for help. Her request was granted, Guayota was chased away, and Magec was able to go back to heaven. Achamán then closed the echeyde with a stopper or with a sugar loaf .
