Special cancellation of the 1978 Chess Olympiad

The 23rd Chess Olympiad was held from October 25 to November 12, 1978 in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires . After the Chess Olympiad in 1939 it was the second Chess Olympiad in South America and the third ever in America after the Chess Olympiad in Havana in 1966 . The game was played in the entrances under the stands of the River Plate Stadium .

organization

Organizational leader of the team chess tournament was Rodolfo Zanlungo, while Héctor Rossetto acted as tournament director. The referee was Paul Klein from Ecuador. There was both an open tournament in which male and female players were allowed to participate, as well as an all-women tournament.

The players were initially given two and a half hours to think about forty moves and then one hour for each additional sixteen moves.

Open tournament

Playing conditions

66 teams with a total of 388 chess players took part in the Chess Olympiad . Argentina used the host exclusive right to participate with two teams. Each team was allowed to consist of up to seven players. Eight countries made their debut at this Olympics, including China, a later world-class team. Other newcomers were Guyana, Zaire, the United Emirates, Jamaica, Libya, Sri Lanka and Mauritania.

The teams competed against each other with four players each, with the pairings being drawn according to the Swiss system . Board points, Buchholz points and finally team points were decisive for the placement of the teams in this order .

1848 games were played. Since only two Filipino players had appeared for the first round against Andorra, the other two games in this encounter were decided without a fight.

The third and fourth places in the preliminary groups went to final group B, fifth and sixth to final group C, and seventh and eighth to final group D, the corresponding final positions nine to sixteen, 17 to 24 and 25 to 32 played.
