Heinz Wirthensohn (born May 4, 1951 in Basel ) is a Swiss chess player . He is a three-time Swiss individual champion and was editor of the chess magazine Die Schachwoche from 1986 to 2003 .

Life

Wirthensohn's chess career began in 1971 when he won the B tournament of the Swiss individual championships in Winterthur , and from then on he continuously developed into one of the best Swiss players. In the following year he got his first chance at a chess Olympiad : In Skopje he was used on the first substitute board behind the then reigning Swiss champion Heinz Schaufelberger (board 4). After Wirthensohn earned standards for the title of International Master (IM) at the 1975 zone tournament in Wraza (Bulgaria), 1976 in Biel and the Chess Olympiad in Haifa , he was appointed IM by FIDE .

In 1979, Heinz Wirthensohn won his first national championship title, and in the Grand Master’s tournament in Biel, he finished second behind Viktor Kortschnoi , making him the best Swiss individual champion. Two years later he repeated this success, again in Biel this time he was fourth and won the title with 4 points ahead of the next Swiss player. He won his last championship title to date in Leukerbad in 1992 .

Heinz Wirthensohn also works as a chess journalist. In addition to looking after the chess column in the Basler Zeitung , he joined the Chess Week in 1986 as Alex Crisovan's successor and worked as an editor until they were hired (2003).

In the 1980s, Wirthensohn was number 2 in the national rankings behind two-time vice world champion Viktor Kortschnoi.

National team

With the Swiss national team, Wirthensohn took part in the chess Olympiads in 1972 , 1974 , 1976, 1978 , 1980 , 1982 , 1986 , 1988 , 1990 and 1996 , the 1985 World Team Championships and the 1973 and 1989 European Team Championships . At the European Team Championship in Bath in 1973 , he achieved the second best result on the seventh board.

In the Swiss National League A , Wirthensohn used to play for Allschwil SG , with which he took part twice in the European Club Cup , from 1999 to 2012 for the Reichenstein chess friends , with whom he became Swiss team champion in 2006 . In the Swiss Bundesliga he played for SK Aarau until 2003 , from 2004 to the 2008/09 season for SC Niederrohrdorf , in the 2010/11 season for Basel BVB , from the 2011/12 season to the 2013/14 season for the SC Lyss-Seeland , he has been playing for SG Riehen since the 2017/18 season . In Germany he has been playing for SGEM Waldshut-Tiengen in the Oberliga and Verbandsliga Baden for years .
