Egon Brestian

Egon Brestian (born July 28, 1964 ) is an Austrian chess player and trainer.

Life

Egon Brestian learned to play chess at the age of twelve. After graduating from high school , he became a professional chess player. He wrote chess columns for the daily newspaper Die Presse and the Austrian chess magazine Schach-Aktiv .

Success as a chess player

Individual championships

In 1983 he won the Austrian State Youth Championship. In 1987 he won the Austrian state championship in Semriach , at the following state championship, in 1989 in Bad Schallerbach , he was second behind Alexander Fauland .

He won several Open, including the Hallein Open in Hallein in September 1988, the Heimo Summer Memorial Tournament in Wagna in August 2001 and the Biedermeier Open of the SK Piestingtal in Markt Piesting in September 2002.

Team championships

At the U-16 team world championship in 1979 in Viborg , Denmark , Egon Brestian received an individual gold medal for his score of 5.5 points from 7 games on the second board ( Josef Klinger played on Austria's first board ). At the Mitropa Cup in Brno in 1991 , Brestian received an individual gold medal for his result of 4 out of 6 on the top board in Austria. He played three times for Austria at the Chess Olympiads : 1990 in Novi Sad with an individual gold medal for his result of 9.5 out of 12 on the third board, in 1994 in Moscow on the second board behind Nikolaus Stanec and in 1998 in Elista on the top board. At the Chess Olympiads he has a total of 19.5 points from 32 games (+14 = 11 −7). He also played for Austria at the European Team Championships in Haifa in 1989 and in Batumi in 1999 (both on the second board).

In club chess he won the Austrian championship four times: with SC Margarethen Winterthur Vienna in the seasons 1992/93 , 1993/94 and 1994/95 and with Styria Graz in the 2005/06 season . He also played for Casino Salzburg , the Spielvereinigung Union Raika Gamlitz / Leutasch and SV Gamlitz , SZ Wien Favoriten , Raiba Pamhagen , SK Potzneusiedl and Sk Piestingtal . He plays company chess for ORF Vienna . In addition, he had missions in the Czech team championship in the 2001/02 season.

He took part in the European Club Cups in 1993, 1994 and 1995 with SC Margareten Winterthur Vienna . In 1993 in Hilversum he played in a team with Anatoli Karpow and in 1995 in Ljubljana with Viktor Kortschnoi .

Title and rating

He has held the title of International Master since 1988 . His Elo rating is 2374 (as of March 2014), his highest to date was 2475 from January to December 1991. At that time, he led the Austrian Elo ranking.

Chess trainer and official

Egon Brestian completed a trainer training at the Federal Sports Academy in Graz . Since 2007 he has also been an official FIDE trainer. From August 2006 to January 2009 he was the coach of the Austrian national teams. At the women's world championship in 2008 in Nalschik , he seconded Eva Moser .

From March 2007 to January 2009 he was chairman of the competitive sports committee of the Austrian Chess Federation . At the ÖSB he is also active in trainer training.
