Mitropapokal (chess)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mitropapokal is an annually held team competition in chess , in which national teams from the countries of Central Europe take part.

Overview and history

Mitropapokal 1953

In 1953 a tournament for city teams was held in Vienna under the same name. However, it is not considered a regular forerunner of today's Mitropa Cup. Belgrade won this competition ahead of Vienna, Zurich, Munich, Salzburg and Antwerp.

founding

The Mitropa Cup was first held in 1976. The main initiators of the foundation were the Austrian chess master Gertrude Wagner , her husband Karl Wagner and the President of the Austrian Chess Federation Kurt Jungwirth .

Events

The competition has been held annually since 1976, but did not take place in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 2001. The orientation is taken over by one of the participating countries.

participating countries

The "classic" field initially consisted of teams from Germany, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. Luxembourg took part in the tournament for the last time in 1990. In the same year the team from Hungary made their debut, a year later Czechoslovakia. In 1993 and 1995 the Netherlands made a "guest appearance" in the Mitropapokal.

After the political upheavals at the beginning of the 1990s, teams from Germany, France, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary now regularly start. Poland keeps in reserve when another country does not. This happened for the women for the first time in 2013, in the open tournament for the first time in 2014.

If individual countries decide not to participate, the places that remain free are often filled by additional teams from the host.

Usually the participating countries do not send their senior national teams, but give strong young players a challenging opportunity to compete.

Tournament form

With the exception of the first tournament in 1976 ( KO system ), a round-robin tournament ("everyone against everyone") is played. Each team consists of four players (plus a substitute). The first evaluation criterion since 2008 has been the team points, previously it was the board points. In 2018, the board points were again rated as the first criterion.

Women's Mitropa Cup

Since 2002 there has also been a women's competition. After the first event, it was resumed in 2005 and has since taken place at the same time and place as the open tournament. Until 2016, the women's tournament was only played on two boards. In 2008 and 2011 they completed a double-round tournament with only six teams each.
