Kurt Jungwirth
Kurt Jungwirth (born September 3, 1929 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician and chess and cultural functionary.
Professionally, he was a professor of Romance studies at the University of Graz until he was appointed regional councilor for culture in the regional government of Styria in 1970, an office that he held until 1985.
From 1985 to 1991 he was deputy governor .
Jungwirth was President of the Austrian Chess Federation from 1971 to 2017 . From 1978 to 1986 he was Vice President of FIDE , from 1986 to 1998 President of the ECU and from 1990 to 1998 Continental President of FIDE for Europe.
Since 1998 he has been a member of the Honorary Board of FIDE.
In the cultural field, he launched the Styriarte in 1985 . Until the end of 2006 he was president of the “ Steirischer Herbst ” cultural festival .
In 2007, Federal President Fischer awarded him the Great Gold Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria .
