Balatonszárszó is a large municipality in Somogy County in southern Transdanubia in Hungary . She was called to 1922 Szárszó and lies on the southern shore of Lake Balaton ( German Balaton ).
Balatonszárszó has 1,895 inhabitants (as of 2011) on an area of 30.13 km² . The place is mainly characterized by summer bathing tourism on the lake.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1082 with the name Zarrosozow . From 1733 the village and its surroundings belonged to the Hunyady family. A Catholic school was founded in 1743 and a Reformed school in 1800. In 1843 a reformed church was built in the classicism style. From 1904 Szárszó developed into a seaside resort. In 1913 the place got a railway station, a post office and telephone connections. The First World War claimed 50 victims from Szárszó.
Attila József , one of the most famous Hungarian poets of the 20th century, died by suicide at the Balatonszárszó train station in 1937 . There is an Attila József memorial in his honor.
In World War II, 34 soldiers died from Szárszó.
The first kindergarten was opened in 1947. In 1948 the two schools were combined and in 1961 they were able to move into a modern school building. In 1972 the Attila József Museum was opened.
In 1973 the place became a large municipality.
Sister city is Joseni (Hungarian Gyergyóalfalu , German Unterdorf ) in Transylvania , Romania .
