history
The area near Földvár has been a settlement area for several thousand years, and it was first mentioned in writing in the 11th century. In its place there was a Celtic earth castle, Hungarian = Földvár, to which the place owes its name.
Földvár has been a seaside resort since 1895. This development is closely connected with the work of the Hungarian diplomat Dénes Széchenyi , a son of the founder of the Hungarian National Museum Ferenc Széchényi , who wanted to build a holiday resort after Somogyvár and on Lake Balaton in 1870 . For this purpose, he commissioned gardeners, architects and medical professionals to build the spa and holiday facilities, which extend over 45 hectares.
In 1950 Földvár became an independent municipality, which in 1985 was combined with the towns of Köröshegy , Kereki , Pusztaszemes and Bálványos to form a large municipality, which was converted into a kistérség ( small area ) after the territorial reform of 2003 , which has now risen to become one of the most important holiday resorts on the southern shore of Lake Balaton .
Balatonföldvár is now a modern seaside resort with around 8,000 guest beds and a beach that can accommodate around 5,000 guests, and it also has an open-air theater and an open-air cinema.
