Zamárdi is a Hungarian town on the southern bank of Lake Balaton in Somogy County , in Siófok County in Hungary . 2,438 inhabitants live in an area of ​​45.15 km² (as of January 1, 2014).

Geographical location

The city is bordered in the north by Lake Balaton, in the east by the village of Siófok , in the south by Balatonendréd and in the west by Szántód . The highest point of the inhabited village is the so-called Kőhegy ("Steinberg") with 176 m.

Zamárdi can be reached via the national road no. 7 , the M7 motorway or by train via the Budapest - Székesfehérvár - Nagykanizsa rail link .

history

The area of ​​the city has been inhabited for thousands of years: as part of the archaeological excavations, numerous finds from the prehistoric age , the Bronze Age and some Celtic , Germanic and Roman objects came to light. The most significant archaeological monument of Zamárdi is the cemetery from the time of the Avars , the largest such locality in the Carpathian Basin with unique finds.

The first written mention of the settlement comes from the year 1082. In 1927 it received the title of a large municipality. Between 1932 and 1943 the municipality was called Balatonzamárdi . On July 1, 2008, it received the rank of city.

Until 1997 the municipality of Szántód also formed part of Zamárdi, but decided in 1995 in a referendum for independence.

The bathing life in the village began in the 1910s, the spectacular development of the bathing settlement then in the 1930s. Today, Zamárdi is considered a tourist stronghold on Lake Balaton, more than 300,000 overnight stays are registered annually.

The village is located in the temperate zone . The annual average temperature is 10.3 C, the number of hours of sunshine 1900–2000 hours per year. The warmest month is July with an average temperature of 21 C. The coldest month is January with an average of -1.1 C.

In Zamárdi, northwest winds are predominant. The wind gusts generally come in from the west-south-west direction. The thunderstorms, which are particularly characteristic of the summer months, suddenly break out, are accompanied by strong winds, but pass quickly. The average annual precipitation is 700 mm.

The Balaton Sound Festival has been taking place in the village every year since 2007, and primarily representatives of electronic music perform.
