Balaton Sound ( also known as Heineken Balaton Sound between 2007 and 2012 for sponsorship reasons , and as Mastercard Balaton Sound between 2013 and 2017 ) is a music festival that has been taking place annually in Hungary since 2007 . With more than 145,000 visitors since 2014, it is one of the largest open-air electronic music festivals in Europe.

The first festival took place on July 12-15, 2007 and has been held since 2016 on five consecutive days in July in the Hungarian city of Zamárdi , directly on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, the largest inland lake in Central Europe. The festival area extends over a length of about 4 km of beach area. The number of visitors was around 88,000 in 2008 and around 94,000 in 2009. It is organized by the organizers of the Hungarian music festival Sziget Festival on the Óbudai Danube Island in Budapest .

The individual live acts of the DJs take place on more than 20 different stages, with a kind of pier being built in the shore area of the lake. Interpretations with synthesizers and drum computers are of central importance and cover the entire spectrum from all electro to R'n'B . In 2017, the entire festival included around 300 individual performances by the artists. National and international stars of these directions appear annually, e. B. from the Netherlands , Germany , the USA and Great Britain . The program has been supplemented by so-called boat parties since 2016. Various radio stations of the NRJ Group will also broadcast parts of the festival live in some parts of Europe.

When voting in early 2013, the festival won the European Festival Award in the Best Medium-Sized European Festival category .
