biography

By 2011: Breakthrough in the EDM scene

Nick Rotteveel was born in Amerongen in the Netherlands, where he also grew up. He later moved to Kingston, Canada for a year but then returned to the Netherlands to complete his education. He completed the last semester in France.

After graduating from school, he worked as a bartender for a while and began producing his own music on the side. The record label "Once Records" then noticed him and offered him a recording contract. With the singles Privilege and Qwerty his first two releases appeared, followed by Funktion One . Inquiries from major labels like “Toolroom” or “ Spinnin 'Records ” also came quickly . Not only the labels expressed interest, but also the French DJ and producer David Guetta got in touch by email to make him the offer to produce a remix of his track When Love Takes Over . Both DJs met in Ibiza for a joint studio session. A friendship developed from this collaboration.

After the success of his remix, Romero made his final breakthrough in the EDM scene with his single My Friend , which was released on "Spinnin 'Records". The song made it to number 4 on the Beatport charts. In 2011 he focused much more on remixes in addition to his own releases. The results included remixes for Where Them Girls At by David Guetta with Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj , What A Feeling by Alex Gaudino and Kelly Rowland and also for Dirty Dancer by Enrique Iglesias , Lil Wayne , Usher and Nayer . In addition to a collaboration with the bingo players , there was also a production with Hardwell , who was also a young DJ at the time , which was called Beta . The number appeared surprisingly on "Spinnin '" and developed into a success, although Beta has serious differences to other Nicky Romero productions.

2012: First commercial successes

In the spring of 2012, Romero gained a lot of popularity due to its production Toulouse . This shaped the Dirty Dutch - as well as the increasingly growing big room scene. She also became one of the longest-staying singles in the Beatport top ten. To recognize his talent, MTV counted him as one of the EDM artists to watch in 2012. At the end of April 2012, Nicky Romero announced the launch of his own record label "Protocol Recordings" on his official Twitter page. He had also announced that he would start his own radio show called "Protocol Radio Show". The label's first release is the track "WTF !?", which he produced together with the Dutch DJ ZROQ. The track was first played publicly by Nicky Romero on his set at the Ultra Music Festival .

Together with David Guetta he held a residency post in the party hot spot in Ibiza for the summer of 2012. He also released the song Wild One Two with Guetta , which appeared under the pseudonym Jack Back . The title is a remix of the two to Flo Ridas and Sias Wild Ones . The song brought Romero to the official single charts of Germany, Austria and Canada for the first time. Also with Guetta, he later released the big room track Metropolis in 2012 . Further collaborations emerged with Calvin Harris and Fedde Le Grand , among others .

In October 2012 Nicky Romero received a DJ-Mag award as “Highest New Entry”. With Skrillex and Dash Berlin , it is one of the highest entries of all time. On November 12, 2012 Romero released the song Like Home together with the Australian DJ-duo Nervo , which also became a great success and hit the charts in Great Britain and Sweden in addition to his home country, the Netherlands. In particular, a remix version by Dannic made the title known.

In the same year he worked with the Swedish DJ and producer Avicii . The announcement of a joint single caused a lot of hype among fans. The instrumental of the song was premiered by Avicii well before the release, and in autumn 2012 the final vocal version premiered in Avicii's “Levels” podcast. After its release on December 26, 2012 with Noonie Bao as the singer, the song became Nicky Romero's first worldwide success. The single climbed to number one in the British singles charts and continued to reach the top ten in Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, among others.

2013: Expansion of his music business, first studio album

Following I Could Be The One and Still The Same Man with Nilson and John Christian, Nicky Romero released his long-awaited single Symphonica in March 2013 , which went straight to number one in the Beatport Top 100. This scored particularly well with its classic lead sound and aggressive electro house drop. His next release, a collaboration with Krewella entitled Legacy , was the next to hit number one on Beatport. The title SOTU , which was created in collaboration with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, then appeared on Steve Angello's “Size Records” . In addition to his residency appearances at Light in Las Vegas, he also appeared for the first time at major festivals such as the Ultra Music Festival , EDC Vegas or Tomorrowland . In addition to his Tomorrowland appearance with David Guetta and Afrojack , his performance, which was presented interactively via Google Glass, caused a sensation at TomorrowWorld. In October 2013 Romero moved up to number 7 on the DJ-Mag charts. He started his weekly radio podcast "Protocol-Records", concentrated more on his record label and left out his own productions, but finally returned around fall 2014 with the song Feet On The Ground , sung by Anouk. At the same time he announced that he would be working on a first studio album.

In addition to his music, he is active in various types of charity projects, such as "10,000 Hours - People Planet Party", with which playgrounds for disabled children are renovated.

2014 to 2016: Step towards progressive house

Legacy formed the background music to promote the return of the Australian soap opera Revenge . This news circulated through numerous media and was ultimately the trigger for a placement at number 50 on the official singles charts in Australia. In August 2014 Nicky entered into a partnership with the EDM lifestyle brand Electro-Family, with whom he designed a bracelet, the entire proceeds of which were donated to the organization "Fuck Cancer".

In October 2014 he released the song Let Me Feel together with the Dutch DJ duo Vicetone and the music group When We Are Wild , which did not show an aggressive electro house style like his original singles, but much more on a shallow progressive house -Style based. The track also moved up to number one on the Beatport charts and received great praise for both vocals and technical aspects. Also in October 2014, Nicky Romero reached 8th place in the DJ-Mag-Top-100 and was one of the hundred best DJs for the third time.

The similar tracks Warriors with Volt & State and Lighthouse followed. Lighthouse is sung by the Scottish singer-songwriter Danny Shah and brought Romero great success, especially in airplay. Shortly thereafter, the song Harmony , which was co-produced with Stadiumx, was released and, like his track Novell , which was released in April 2016, continued his high-energy progressive track. This was described as technically more and more advanced from release to release. After a vocal version of Novell , which was created in collaboration with Eric Lumiere, he worked with Nile Rogers , which resulted in the single Future Funk . These, as well as the track Ready to Rumble , formed Romero's foundations outside of the Progressive House area. The latter also had elements of his classic Toulouse .

In the fall of 2015, his rank in the DJ-Mag decreased by 10 places, and Nicky Romero ended up in 18th place.

2017 to 2019: pop and future bass

After the electro-house single Iconic , which was produced in collaboration with John Christian, he concentrated on the one hand on the work within his record label by appearing, among other things, as the editor of the publications. In cooperation with the US trio Cheat Codes , the single Sober was created in the summer of 2017 , which placed him in the US club and electronic charts. Later in 2018, the bass and dubhouse production Only For Your Love appeared , which Romero brought out together with Florian Picasso.

After the commercial single Sober from 2017, he worked with the singer Rozes the following year , which resulted in the track Where Would We Be . This corresponded to a future bass style. In a similar guise, the song Me On You with the British singer Taio Cruz was released in the summer of 2018 . Several electronic singles were also released at the same time, including Duality and Here We Go (Hey Boy, Hey Girl) with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike . In the late summer of 2018, he released the song Be Somebody , which was created in collaboration with the American DJ Steve Aoki and singer Kiiara . The track was part of Aoki's studio album Neon Future III .

At the end of 2018 followed the song Paradise with the German producer Deniz Koyu and the Canadian indie rock band Walk off the Earth and the progressive house song Bittersweet with Trilane & Kokaholla and singer Quarterback. With the single My Way , which contains vocals from the singer Alice Berg, another commercial single was also released.

In 2019 the future bass song Distance , which was composed with the American actress and singer Olivia Holt , was released. He co-produced the electro house song Ring the Alarm , which premiered the previous year, with David Guetta. It was released in February 2019. The song Deep Dark Jungle followed in March 2019 and forms Romero's first psytrance release. He was supported by the DJ duo Teamworx.

Work as a producer

In addition to his own projects, Nicky Romero is also active as a producer for other musicians. He produced the song Right Now for Rihanna and David Guetta , which was released as a single on May 28, 2013. He also produced, together with David Guetta and Will.i.am, his collaboration with Britney Spears It Should Be Easy , in which his classic Toulouse melody was revived. In 2014 Romero also produced the album version for David Guetta's and Sia's title Bang My Head as well as No Money No Love for David Guetta's studio album Listen , which was created in collaboration with Showtek . He also co-produced Dragon Night from Sekai no Owari's second studio album, Tree .
