The Electric Daisy Carnival (often simply called EDC ) is a three-day music festival in the field of electronic dance music that takes place annually on the last weekend in June in Las Vegas . In addition to the main event in Las Vegas, festivals are now also held in Orlando , Denver , Dallas and Puerto Rico .

development

The first Electric Daisy Carnival was held in 1997 at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles with 5,000 visitors . Since then, it has been carried out at various locations in Southern California and has been able to steadily increase the number of participants. In 2007 the festival was first held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum & Exposition Park. The number of visitors was 40,000. In the following year the number of visitors was already 65,000, which led to long waiting times at the entrance. In addition, a second festival was held in Colorado for the first time in 2008 . The Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in Aurora served as the event site .

In 2009, the main festival in Los Angeles was expanded to two days. There were over 40,000 visitors on Friday and over 90,000 on Saturday. In addition to Los Angeles and Colorado, an Electric Daisy Carnival was also held in Puerto Rico in August 2009 . The festival took place in the Arena Fairgrounds in San Juan .

In 2010 the festival was again able to increase the number of visitors. Over 185,000 people attended the festival in Los Angeles on the two days. The headliners were Armin van Buuren , Deadmau5 , the Swedish House Mafia and Above & Beyond . The event came under criticism from local authorities after some visitors were hospitalized for drug abuse and a 15-year-old participant died of hyponatremia , an electrolyte deficiency in the body that resulted from consuming too much water in too short a time. A temporary ban on raves in Los Angeles was discussed. However, the moratorium was lifted on July 16, 2010. At the same time, however, stricter security requirements were imposed. In the future, an age limit of 18 years will apply and doctors will be required at the venue. The other festivals also grew again in 2010 and moved to larger venues. The Colorado festival moved to Denver, the Puerto Rico festival was held at Estadio Sixto Escobar , and another festival was held at Dallas Fair Park , Texas .

After the Coliseum Commission hesitated for a long time to approve the event in 2011, the organizer Insomniac Events decided to leave Los Angeles and hold the festival again in Las Vegas . The Las Vegas Motor Speedway serves as the event site . In addition to the significantly larger site, the festival was also held over three days for the first time. For the first time, the festival took place at night, from 8 in the evening to 6 in the morning. 13 art installations were set up across the site and at 2 a.m. there was a 15-minute fireworks display. Tiësto , David Guetta and the Swedish House Mafia were signed as headliners . A total of 230,000 visitors were counted over the three days. In addition to the four previous festivals, a two-day festival was held in Orlando , Florida, in 2011.
