"There are so many ways to a great song, so many different ways to get there."
Life
Matthew Koma was born in Brooklyn in 1987. He grew up on Long Island, New York. Even as a child he was enthusiastic about music and was discovered after various record deals with different labels. To this day he writes songs for himself and for artists of various genres. During his career, he met the Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen , with whom he was in a committed relationship from August 2012 to March 2015. They are also studio partners. Koma currently lives in Los Angeles. On October 25, 2018, he and his current partner Hilary Duff became parents of a daughter.
Career
After writing and singing songs at a young age, Koma landed his first recording contract at the age of 16. However, his first tours did not bring him the desired success. Nevertheless, more songs followed and in 2012 several house producers noticed him. He started working as a co-author.
Various collaborations then appeared in 2012. Matthew Koma had first successes as the author of the songs Calling (Lose My Mind) by Sebastian Ingrosso , Alesso and Ryan Tedder . Koma himself said that Calling (Lose My Mind) was the first time he had worked with a well-known artist. It is unusual and inspiring at the same time. Shortly afterwards, when his relationship with Carly Rae Jepsen was announced, he produced and wrote all of the songs on her album. Then the German-Russian dubstep and house DJ Zedd hired him to write more songs for his debut album. Writing assignments from Far East Movement , Kat Graham and Black Cards also followed. Among the songs written for Zedd was the song Spectrum , which made Koma better known as a singer. It became his first single chart placement. In Japan the song moved up to number 4. Chart positions were also booked in Europe. Thereupon the Swedish DJ Alesso also recorded the track Years with him as singer , which advanced to the top of the Beatport charts. The lyrics of the song were written on the flight to Los Angeles. Melodically, it is considered Koma's favorite song. At the end of 2012, Koma released his debut single Parachute , in parallel with the EP of the same name. During his live and studio appearances for various DJs, he accompanied the American singer Adam Young alias Owl City on his tour in autumn 2012.
Matthew Koma is also known as the artist of many "vocal versions" of instrumental pieces . The Dutch DJs Fedde Le Grand and Nicky Romero recorded a “vocal edit” with him on their instrumental track Sparks . The Dutch house projects Showtek and Justin Prime, together with Koma, turned their Cannonball into the song Earthquake , which reached high chart positions in Great Britain and the Netherlands in 2013.
Later in 2013, Koma worked with Dutch house DJ Hardwell . Together they released the song Dare You in December 2013 , which became another chart success. In Scotland the song reached the top 5. At the same time, the shooting of the official music video for the track Find You , which he recorded together with Zedd and Miriam Bryant, took place. The song was released in spring 2014. As a solo artist, he released the song One Night in 2013 . At the same time his EP The Cherrytree Sessions was released .
His debut album has been announced for 2014. Koma also achieved single chart placements in collaboration with the Dutch DJ Tiësto and the song Wasted , which was included on Tiësto's studio album A Town Called Paradise . With the song he reached chart positions in many countries, including Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. Also available on A Town Called Paradise , the song Written appeared in Reverse , in which Hardwell also played alongside him .
In May 2014 the Dutch DJ Afrojack released his album Forget the World . On this album Koma sings the tracks Illuminate and Keep Our Love Alive . Both tracks were presented in Afrojack's live set at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, USA, in March .
